does anyone know where the connector for the front brake light switch is?
I hope I don't need to remove the fuel tank...

on mine just under the tank right hand side , sorry

As firstle says... the tank has to come off.

If you have done it before on your own bike and know where every connector is you can do it without disconnecting the tank but its a pain, better to remove the tank.

I have changed a few without removing the tank, last one was only a few weeks ago on my 83 RS, didn't disconnect the tank and just wedged it up enough to access the connector.

But I now keep a few 5 litre containers and a little bulb primer and pipe I got from Tills.de for about €3.50 and its a doddle to empty the tank and just put the petrol into one of the other bikes.

You can remove the tank by only getting the seat off and out of the way.  The fairing does not prevent lifting the rear of the tank and moving it back and up.  There often is enough slack in the fuel lines to get the tank back far enough to get to the electrical connections under the tank.

If you remove the fuel return line from it's spigot on the tank, you can extend the hose with an 8mm hose coupling and a couple feet of cheap 8mm I.D. hose so you can pump the tank out with the fuel pump while the engine is running.  Only takes a couple minutes.  The return line is the hose that comes out from behind the air box where the regulator is hidden.  The supply from the pump is the line that goes directly from the tank to the fuel rail.

As they say, "It's a tankless job."

I managed to prop up the tank using some old bedsheets. Hopefully none of the potentially brittle fuel lines were damaged...
It took some time to locate the connector and cutting the zipties in such confined space.
Here's a picture incase someone might need to know where to look
