My Red 1991 K75 had been sitting for a spell while I've been using the Silver K75. No particular reason but today I thought to take Red out for a ride. First thing I noticed was that the speedometer was not working nor was the odometer. Tach and all the other instruments were working correctly. My initial assumption/guess was that corrosion was interfering with the signal from the rear wheel pickup. And if the speedometer wasn't working then the odometer would not either. This must have occurred while Red was sitting in the garage out of the weather as I don't remember any such issues when I last put Red away.

Returning home I took the instrument pod off the bike and using a electrical cleaner sprayed and cleaned the connectors and the pins from the instrument pod. Reconnecting the instrument pod to the connectors I started the bike and with it on the center stand ran it through the gears, i.e. I mean that I had the rear wheel racing quite fast. Still no movement from the speedometer. So I checked the rear wheel pickup. Not much to see or check  but I pulled it and cleaned it and re-inserted it. No change in the symptoms. I have another instrument cluster from the current project an '86 K100 and so substituted it for the K75 instrument pod. Symptoms remained the same. Other instrument lights, tachometer etc work but not the speedo. Now the K100 may or may not be totally functional and a complete swap for the K75. Though I would have thought they (K100, K75) are the same. I did note that the K100 instrument pod gear indicator not working.

My reading of the Haynes and Clymer manuals electrical schematics indicate to me that the circuit between rear pickup and speedometer are rather simple, two wires. But
1. Has anyone else run into this problem? Your findings?
2. Any pointers to how to discern which pin is which on the two instrument pod connectors? I would like to ring out the circuitry for shorts and check resistance of the pickup.
3. Suggestions of things to look at or try?

thanks and best regards

Hold an electric soldering iron next to the sensor at the rear drive. I think Canada uses a 50Hz supply so it should read 61KPH.
I have had to remove the sensor sometimes to get it to work.

Interesting approach. I've also been told to clean the connector under the right battery cover. The one that sits next to the fuel pump connector. Will be doing that tomorrow as well.
Thanks

I think the cable from the speed pickup is routed near the right foot peg plate.  There is a chance it is pinched or otherwise damaged there.

US and Canada are 60 Hz.

And not all soldering irons put out enough of a magnetic field for the K speedo sensor. I have some that will and some that won't. Not sure why.

A lot of soldering irons have resistive heating elements so they will not have a noticeable magnetic field.  Weller soldering guns use a step down transformer and send low voltage high current through the heating element.  They will activate the speed pickup when it gets into the field of the transformer.

Now that is useful information as I have a Weller soldering gun.
thanks .75

I have concluded that the speedo on my K75 is temperature sensitive.
If I start my ride with the outside temperature below 10 Deg C the speedo and mileometer will not work for 3 to 4 miles then lazily begins to work normally. A warmer day everything works straight away.
The tachometer is unaffected what ever the temperature.

In lieu of a soldering iron, if you have a PC with a sound card, you can try Karamba to debug your speedometer.  Look through my Karamba / K-diag tutorial (https://www.k100-forum.com/t2038-karamba-speedometer-calibration-program-tutorial#14208) to find out more.

There is a two-pin connector under the right battery cover where the sensor plugs into the harness. Try cleaning that and reseating the connector a few times to improve contact. The speed signal is very low amplitude and any corrosion will degrade the signal.

Rob, I need to put Karamba on my "new" laptop, but haven't been able to do it for several years now because as I recall it has been behind a paywall of some sort.  Do you know any way around it?

Hi Jim, Karamba was replaced several years ago by K-diag. K-diag does everything Karamba does plus more (with the right hardware adapter). K-diag is available for download for free from the Technical Resource Centre on this site.

I cleaned the two pin connector. It was pretty bad in there so I hit it with a lot of the spray electronics cleaner. Connected the instrument pod up and cranked the bike. And now the speedo is working again. Thanks all. I'll try and download the diagnostic software and see what it can do.

robmack, could you translate this to a link? I didn't find the "Technical Resource Centre" on www.k100-forum.com.

Here's the K-diag link:   https://www.kforum-tech.com/Karamba/K_DIAG.zip

Go to the "Portal" page of the K100-forum site and locate the link "K100 Forum Tech Page". Click on it and accept the disclaimer. You'll come to this page and K-diag is highlighted with a RED box in the picture below.
