Hello, Am looking for a temporary spare shock for my 85 K100. Need to be able to swap for a rebuild on my Works Performance or for whatever reason.
Thanks!

If all else fails, eBay is your friend:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/294518057381?hash=item4492a4e9a5:g:~cwAAOSwJzdheCDh

If you only need something to hold up the rear end of the bike, you can make a strut with a chunk of steel that has a couple holes in it.  I actually made one with a piece of oak for a bike I was working on.  It allowed me to leave the rear wheel on the bike and move it around the garage.

I have a trip coming up 4/7 that we were going to ride to our destination. The works is leaking fluid badly. Was hoping to find a stock one that I could use temporarily while I rebuilt or sent out for rebuild. Can't hurt to have a spare.

Original shock is junk. Buy a YSS for less.

These are the guys who built your shock.  Give them a call.  I had a shock done there around 2017, and as I recall their price was pretty reasonable, about $100.  They also sell rebuild kits and have rebuild instructions.

The downside is that a rebuild might take a couple months.  A second Works shock I had, I rebuilt myself.  As I recall, there is just a shaft seal and a couple o-rings involved.  Parts are about $25, and you need a spring compressor you can get on eBay for about $40.  The job took me a couple hours total.

You need to have the pressure released and then recharged when you are finished.  I had a local shop that works on dirt bikes and snowmobiles do it for $20.  A local shop might be able to do all the work for you.  Works shocks were pretty common a few years back and they aren't rocket surgery.

This guy also has parts and rebuild instructions.  I think he does rebuilds as well.

I never replied to this. I did call them and the gent said that they are swamped. It is just him now. He was great. Said would be a few months before he could do it. He also said he would sell the kit and I could call him for direction if needed. Pretty cool of him.

Thanks
Bill

Sad to hear that Works is in such bad shape.  Sounds like Gil's daughter has moved on.  They were great people to work with.  I guess they aren't selling new shocks and just doing service work now.  Is that correct?

You know I believe he said he had some units for sale. I am going to rebuild the one I have as I have read some decent reviews on the shock. First I need to fix the 37 year old stuff that is breaking now. Laughing Part of the fun of owning vintage stuff. That being said I do like the bike. Still just under 2k on it.

I'll be swapping out the stock shock from my '92 K75 base model if interested. Looks to be in good condition with 32.6K miles on it.
