Just got this last Thursday - 1989 with 50K on the clock.  Can't wait to get out again!

Some more pictures - found a set of Gen 2 side cases in excellent condition (yes, I would have preferred Gen 3), and for $125 for the set, I couldn't pass them up

at this point, I'm going to keep as is - I love the color scheme and lines of the bike, couldn't imagine changing that right now.  Although I will admit that I was perusing the Öhlins site and looking at those beautiful forks and shocks, and now they come in black

I was just pulling your leg MD , please keep it as is , I've got an Ohlins BM137 on my bike , when I got it 4 years ago they had already stopped selling them off the shelf here in Australia , mine was put together using the parts list by the local importer , worth every cent

Very nice bike, I love those SEs. My favourite brick of all.  

All jokes aside please keep it as is, they are plenty of K bikes out there in bad shape which can be turned into a cafe racer etc.  A good example SE like that deserves to stay as is...

Yes, probably hard to find the matching white ones.

Go for Gen 3 cases. Better overall and more leakproof than Gen 2.

thanks for the advice.  I also understand that the Gen 3 cases will fit a full face helmet, which is a plus.

Gen 3 for sure if you can get them, I have gen 2 and you could drive a truck through the gaps in the seams! It is also pretty easy to have cases painted to match the colour scheme of the bike.

I have my eyes on a set of Gen 3s that would need one lock cylinder - I could then get them painted - tempted to get them painted in the blue as opposed to white.  Is $380 reasonable for cases that have one abrasion scuff in a bottom outside corner?

It is a little steep but gen 3 are the newest and if you are going to have them painted the scuffing would be covered in the process.  I wish I had gen 3 just for the full face helmet capability.  I have a 22 lt top box a tank bag and gen 2 cases yet end up with my spare helmet through my arm when I need to carry it with me!

It's not THAT easy to have them repainted. If you don't want to do a taped off ghetto job then you need to CAREFULLY (they cost $50 each and tear easily) pry off the rubber scuff pads before painting.

Yeah mine are gen 2 so did not come with scuff pads so it was easier for me

I found a set of Gen 2 cases locally for $150 and they look to be in excellent condition, so I will be checking the out tomorrow.  Anyone put a door gasket on the cases to improve the seal?

Gorgeous SE, but I'm biased.  Glad you didn't take the bait of butchering your bike into a cafe or whatever.  Right answer.
Perhaps I'm odd but the white saddlebags don't appeal to me, although I just bought a white topped 22L top case.  Painting the existing ones blue to match the bike is a departure from factory colours, if that's an issue to you.  I like bikes pretty much box stock.  Regardless, I have to keep them that way to get my cheap "collectors" insurance.
I used some screen door rubber gasket tube in my saddlebags.  I carry everything in zip locks anyway.

I agree with filmcamera , there are plenty of tired old K100's that could benefit from a new lease of life in the form of a project but your SE is one to keep as is and enjoy, beautiful bike !

I guess I'm not completely against white bags.  Here's a pic from last Saturday on my ride up to Mount Baker with my new white topped top case.

Love the '88/'89 SE with that beautiful paint job and pinstripes and just have bought another to replace mine from '96.  I'm in Oz, Canberra, and bought it from Bathurst.  70K kms and looked after/garaged/ex-Japanese import.  Looking at this post we should start a Club!

Yep, wonderful condition, 
paid $7.8k for it and the owner had done a long list of repairs/maintenance, including fuel tank reweld due to rust/repaint, and full fluid changes, including a repair to the front fork yoke where manuafacturing had left 1 fork unclamped as the bolt hole hadn't been fully drilled and the standard bolt "bottomed out".  

All in all I'm a lucky fella 'cause I had been looking to get one imported from the USA but they were all sold - a number of their new owners are on the forum 'cause I recognise the photos:-)
