from memory and I am not an electronic wiz, but I seem to remember that one way of checking the speedo is to bring a mains powered soldering iron close to the sensor (at the rear wheel) and see if the speedo starts to read some speed, eg 80km/h.
Also there is a bunch of posts around from people who have dissected the electronics and can give you detailed info on frequency vs speed etc. I have this somewhere and will post it if I find it.
So, I believe that the speedo is nothing than a volt meter which responds to A/D conversion to drive the needle to some level.
I haven't thought about how the gears are driven.
