Just want to give my brain something to chew over while I sleep.

Rebuilt and installed clutch last week. While it was stripped I disconnected the GPI switch for cleaning. Inevitably it did a full-on curse of the mummy in my hands, so I have a new one on order. Today, I refitted the tank and started the bike to check that the two seals I replaced were dry. All kicked off ok then ran out of petrol, I topped the tank and the starter turned, engine spluttered and died. After that the starter switch did nothing.

Kill switch is off.

All dash lights are on.

Battery reading at main cable is close to 13v.

No stand switch (sidecar).

No clutch connected (waiting for GPI switch).

EFI connected.

Fuel pump connected.

The starter runs fine from direct connected jump leads.

Starter relay clicks on IGN on.

Got plenty more fault tracing to do tomorrow, but does anyone know what the systems identify as the gear position when there is no GPI switch installed. I’m assuming Neutral as it started once, but can’t confirm through resources.

All troubleshooting logic pretty much starts at ‘is bike in neutral’.

Cheers.

Connect the clutch switch and pull in the clutch.  That sends 12V to the start button.

Odd, I refitted the cover damaged GPI switch, Indicator showed neutral and it started first press. I have enough other jobs to finish so I’m going to let the old girl keep that mystery to herself. Hope I don’t regret it on the road.

Yup, you'll never convince me that our beloved flying bricks are anything other than living, breathing creatures put on this earth to torture us exquisitely.

You need GPI neutral OR clutch switch.

Ks are intelligent critturs......if you have no GPI to give you neutral then you need a clutch switch....as said just short out the two wires in the loom plug.

If its an early K then you can pull out the rear brake switch and use that one, its the same part. Then you can refit the gas tank, to fit a new rear brake switch doesn't need anything off.

Thanks all. Olaf, I'm with you. It would seem to make sense that it needs some positive confirmation of neutral. And all is fine now with the damaged GPI back in til the replacement arrives.
The mystery (which I'm choosing to ignore) is why it started that one time only with neither clutch nor gpi switch.

If you have a 16v you also have a side stand switch.
