From all I’ve read I thought the right hand pivot would be the biggest problem. It was stuck but I solved it.
However the LH is a nightmare. I’ve seen one post that says they can get cross threaded. Anyone seen this, and what was the solution please?

The lock nut came off easily, but turning the hex got gradually tighter the further out I unwound it.

Long story short, the LH trunnion will not wind out any further than what seems to be the end of the thread at the inside end and so won’t clear the swing arm. During this process I have rounded the allen socket so now stuck.

I’ve ordered a used trunnion pin (pretty certain that any solution will trash the old one) and 2 used locking nuts to see If I can get it turning again with a 27mm socket. failing that I might grind some flats into the threads and try a spanner.

Anyone encountered, solved, this problem?

often fitted with Loctite ....look for the Loctite dissolving fluid ...often just acetone based

or heat the area to burn off  the Loctite with a gas - propane torch

good luck

Applying Loctite to an adjustable fastener that has a lock fitting is a peculiar approach. Floggings are in order. If heat doesn't release it, let the pin cool.

Usually the pivot pin is backed out first until it is only slightly engaged with the swingarm then the fixed pivot is removed.

Perhaps the swingarm is bearing on the pivot pin because the swingarm is out of alignment. I might:

  • put a jack under the swingarm to support and align it,
  • screw the pivot pin in so its head is slightly more than the width of the locknut distant from the mounting hole,
  • hand tighten the locknut onto it,
  • pound a torx bit into the pin's damaged hex opening or unscrew the pin enough to attach a bolt extractor onto it—the two nut system might work too,
  • unscrew the pin until it stops,
  • spray Freeze Off or another freeze compound onto its shank up to the hole,
  • then extract it incrementally by back-and-forth rotation.

Insert the fixed pin into the swing arm just enough to position the swing arm properly in the frame.  Then the other pin should come out easily if you haven't buggered the threads.

Have you removed the final drive, shock, caliper and drive shaft from the swing arm?  The pivots are the last thing to remove.

It may be to late but you need to clean the thread that is protruding on the inside. You can get at it with a tooth brush and some degreaser. Best to remove the right side pin then turn the left adjuster in a turn or so then clean it.

Thanks everyone, have tried all these but the freezing. Currently waiting for an epoxied lock nut to set and move forward from there.
In a year of working on the old girl with your support this is the first time I’ve felt proper stuck. Which is a credit to the designers and two fingers up to the loctite bu**er, which is what I think has happened.

G'Day All,
This is probably a real dumb idea but is it possible to weld a nut or something to the pivot pin to help with the extraction.
Cheers
Tom

If it were nothing-left-to-try stuck, and beasting it would likely ruin the female thread in the gearbox, I'd drill, dremel and chisel the stud away from the inside.

I agree with Chris regarding drilling it out from the centre with increasing size drills. If you can get a hold of left hand drill bits (don't laugh, I have some) all the better.

Good luck.

The final part of the problem is cleaning up the threads afterwards. IIRC they're a cycle pitch (very fine) and the cost of a tap is the value of three mortgages. Okay, so the 24mm one needed to do the Guzzi swingarm pivots was £74 but you get the picture.
