Check oil level and looks like I've water entering from somewhere. Mineral spirits fill and dump then fresh oil? Or just do a couple full ride dumps? Any tricks for keeping it out in the first place? I do ride a ton in the rain.  Thanks in advance for the help!

If it were my moto, I'd just dump what's in there pronto then I might do a couple of dumps after riding twenty minutes or more depending on what I find on the dipstick. The only tip I've got is act soon and check often. It's probably just condensation that has occurred from neglect and is having an effect after increased use.

Rain has never had such an effect in my moto's transmission and I ride in plenty of it. What's the moto's history? Please post the year and model of your moto when describing a problem.

Make sure your transmission vent cap is still there and don't spray water near it when washing.

Thanks for all the help. I'll check on the vent for sure. Sounds like it's a non issue with these things. Best Regards Steve.

Put half of a 50 ml tube of LiquiMoly gear oil additive in the transmission. It will shift noticeably more smoothly.

Sounds good! I've a big bottle of the stuff for the final drive on my 71 ambo. I did notice that one of the guys had put some silicon in the gear selector switch (?) to keep it from reading nan. wonder if somehow anything is getting past that? have noticed that it will quit working on wet days (150 mile round trip commute). Anyhow a couple of fill and dumps will see how it goes. Thanks!

One sometimes is tempted to take a powerwasher to a K bike...

Dont.

You can blow off the clutch pivot boot, drive water in the gear position switch...... and thinking well one will avoid that area.....then unwittingly blow the vent cap away from top of the gear box.

I have over the years sold 3 ECUs for a K100 and each was to someone who used high pressure washer. besides Dewcartys they are very good things to avoid.

About the pressure washers. Noted they have caused more trouble around moto's than they are worth in my years of riding. Don't even own one. That said, the PO may have but he was/is a airplane guy and would not ever ride it in the rain. Fastidious maintenance in his ownership and really shocked at the amount of love and work that had gone into the bike. A local guy and just wanted to upgrade to ride with his buddies on the yearly sojourn.  85 k100rs, has been not without it's trouble. but thanks to the list I've been able to keep up with the electrical stuff. I think that is what took the blush off of the bike for him. As we are all well aware the K is not in sympathetic hands at most dealerships. It was handed over to a specialist retired bmw mechanic that is down in the  willamete valley in oregon  by Euegene for the final sorting of the electrical issues that were plaguing it. He even missed a few things or just got it running and stopped so as to not gouge the PO.

Anyhow this is my fall/winter/spring commuter and it stays in the barn mostly when it is nice out. love the heat from the engine and the fairing at 0400 in the morning at 80 to 85 (indicated) heading north to work. That's the deal on this one. Love the bike just going to make it better. Thanks again for the thoughts and wish I had more to update with as to how it is working out. work is busy right now and unable to trouble shoot further.

Plan going forward is to pull back half off and replace the clutch rod boot it's newish, but have a new one, grease the clutch arm and check the gear indicator (it's new) and potentially see about greasing that up.  Thanks again for the collective inputs!!!!

Stop by and say hi if you're ever riding along the west side of Hood Canal.

Another thing to consider is that you'll get a reasonable amount of condensation when riding in cold climates. Using a synthetic (has a slightly more detergent action and more capable of holding impurities) and changing a little more regularly could work.

Thanks Hollister, I hadn't considered that and it's a good point. I've dumped and filled, then checked, it's clearing up, will dump again today and fill with synthetic. After it stops raining again. As an aside I've no measuring tool and just use a dial caliper to measure the oil level in the gearbox. Think I will make a tool for measuring going forward as well today. Bike didn't come with it's tool roll unfortunately. Why do guys hold on to those when they sell it on? The PO didn't get it with the accessories. Something to rectify going forward.

Best, Steve.

116mm is your length. Just put a mark on screwdriver in your tool kit......don't use a loose one though, if it falls in you're fekd.
