I am curious about something...my 85 K100 RS has self-canceling turn signals, while my 97 R1100GS does not...were they model specific, or did BMW stop making them early on?

My 2004 R1100S had self cancelling indicators. My 2018 Ducati has not.

KisanTech & Signal Dynamics make a self-cancelling relay that adds a pulsing brake light and an illuminated turn signal option in two brightness levels for Oilheads & some K bikes.

Kisan

84 K100 (a bike well ahead of its time when launched) - self cancelling
98 R1100s (a bike definitely behind the times when it was launched) - not self cancelling
03 R1200CL (a bike definitely not from any time, should be launched if you ask me Shocked ) - self cancelling

No idea what the heck BMW is up to with this feature...?

Yamaha XS250/XS400 1977 onwards all had self-cancelling indicators. Had three of the buggers - talk about self-flagellation... Evil or Very Mad

So, it looks like the GS was designed without them while the Ks and some of the Rs had them...interesting

Thanks

I think you will find that the reason is that the R100 and R1150 bikes do not have electronic speedo, so the electronic speed pluses required to work the self cancelling indicators is not available.

The Yams had mechanical drive speedos. There was a reed relay inside that (IIRC) pulled in when the indicator was selected and eventually dropped out again, cancelling the indicators. Thanks for the nightmare memories.... Evil or Very Mad

I remember my R1100RS could be programmed on some parts of the bike, maybe possible to go to a dealer or someone with the computer to check it out?

There is no programming available at dealerships to change anything turn indicator-related on the R850, R900, R1100, R1150 or R1200C Oilheads. One way to self-cancel turn signals on these models is by use of a relay by Kisan in place of the stock relay.

HERE is a link to the Kisan site. The SM-5 Signalminder self-canceller has been in production for yonks, as well, it allows, where legal as in some US states and other countries that also have gubmints too busy with other distractions to pay attention, the use of all four indicators as either full bright or half bright running lights, with a flashing brake light option.
