I got my oil filter off by making these 2 brackets and screwing them to the top of the filter. Then I bolted the rest of the angle iron I used to make the brackets to the brackets and slowly hoisted. I heard the rubber moan and she moved.

Phew....I did not want to remove the oil pan.

You can also pound screwdrivers at an angle through an old oil filter to get it off.

Maybe it's just how the picture came out but that oil filter doesn't appear to have any fluting on the end.

Be sure to use a torque wrench to put the oil sump plate back on.  Those screws can easily strip the aluminum threads on the bottom of the oil sump body.

It is a K&N filter with the socket nut on the top. No fluting. Yes, I know about over torquing. It is easy to do. 

I tried the screw driver trick with no luck.

On a more positive note I also flushed the front brakes, changed the transmission fluid, added fuel injection cleaner and topped up with new gas.

Well with winter just around the corner can we expect a ride report as I would guess you are wanting to go put some miles on the grand old lady.

I have put 1 kilometers on her since Monday

Her new tires should arrive tomorrow with mounting next week then off to get a safety check so I can get plates.

My first oil change went very much like yours Pprince.  A stuck oil filter seems to be a rite of passage with a K.  It would be interesting to hear how you think the K compares to your GTL - flagship touring models from different BMW eras.

A great tip I picked up on  a Chris Harris Video is to drill  three holes into an oil filter cup at 120 degree intervals. Run self tappers in through the holes for difficult filters and it will take a lot of extra force. 

I have removed quite a few sticky ones this way.

I already have an opinion

The RT is a 35 year old machine and was high end at the time. The K1600 is a modern sport touring bike.

The '85 is slow, hard riding with poor weather protection in comparison. The RT is very slow compared to my V65. The V65 is raw performance. The RT was state of the art touring and a different class of bike compared to the V65.

The K1600 is extremely fast, handles very well, has great weather protection, has advanced features like adaptive ABS and traction control, Shift Assist, built in navigation system, great fuel economy, etc. The fuel range on the K1600 is better than 400 km's per tank and I have gotten as much as 500 km's keeping my right wrist under control.

I am on my second K1600 having traded in my 2011 in on my 2018. I have put 15,000 km's on the new one in the last 3 months. 

I know I have to experience the RT a bunch more but I know it is a vintage bike and I like it for what it is. The same with my V65. They are time machines to an earlier era. The K1600 is my comfort tourer. I am heading out to Colorado in 2 weeks on the K1600. Because I can
