Hi I am planning a main rear seal replacement this weekend with spline lube and clutch friction plate replacement. I just have a few questions if anyone can help answer i would be grateful☺
1) should i submerge the new seal in oil before placement for a period of time?
2) should i put lube on the back plate/flywheel splines?
3) what is the torque procedure for the main nut? i.e tighten to a certain torque then loosen than tighten to a different/final torque setting?

Make sure to buy a BMW rear main seal...also do the front gearbox seal and flywheel O ring.

You also likely to need drive shaft boot and clip, clutch pivot arm boot and clip, flywheel nut must be replaced, clutch bolts should also be new.

Hi Olaf yes I have the new parts All you mentioned except for the front gear box seal so I will order that now. Any advice on how to carefully remove the old seals?

Mine came out in the time honoured tradition of screwing a pair of self tappers into the old seals and pulling them out with an all essential vise grips.

Its kind of brutal so wait and see what else comes up but you most certainly do not want to damage any metal surfaces.

Before you take the FD off, I'd recommend having a set of replacement bearings in hand.  The plastic in the BMW ones often falls apart when you take the FD off and the needle bearings get loose.

You can also use the right-angled end of a small nail puller like this around the edges to separate the clutch pressure plates:

Aside from the splines the only thing that needs lubing is the ring that the clutch spring rides on.  #2 in this diagram:

When you use Duck's tool (or similar) to separate the plates, work round the plate doing a small bit at a time. The three pins that locate the assembly can

a: corrode in badly
b: bend easily if you put too much pressure on, preventing reassembly.

Yes, you can use the same spline grease on the drive shaft splines that you use on the clutch splines.

Here's what the BMW K1100 service manual says regarding lubing the clutch parts when assembling:

• Grease all lubrication points with
Optimoly MP 3.(Or whatever spline grease you're using.)

Lubrication points:
Contact surfaces of pressure plate/diaphragm
spring, wire ring, cone/tip of control rod.

I'd also put some anti-seize on the three pins to make the clutch easier to get apart the next time.

Well job done! Started on Saturday afternoon dismantle it then on Sunday put it back together. It looked like the main seal wasn't Leaking but the rubber ring/washer was tost! But I replaced the main seal anyway. New friction plate and spline lube as well. Took it out for a spin on Monday it seems a lot smoother less vibrations and nicer hear change. So hopefully it will be ok! I am fairly convinced the seal in the final drive is leaking as the drive shaft had hear oil all over it and hardly any at the gearbox end, the seal on the gearbox looks to have been replaced before and the transmission oil always seemed fine. Anyway next job is the water/oil pump and rear disc when i get the cash! Can the final drive be repaired? As hanes manual said to complex for the amateur! Or is a use one a better bet? It's not uncommon for the final drive pinion seal to leak.  I think the biggest issue for DIYing it is having a tool to unscrew #3 in this diagram:

I might leave it and keep an eye on the oil levels i think it's been like this for ages i remember putting lube on the final drive about 2years ago and seen oil in the swing arm but was not educated in k bikes so assumed it was ok. Is it ok to leave? Their is no external leak thanks k,

I don't think they leak that fast/much so it's probably OK to ride as is if you keep the FD topped off.

I have never seen them leak much, the most oil I have ever seen there is probably about a teaspoon full if that.

That adds up with me as their was plenty of oil in the final drive! So it probably been like that long before i got the bike as their was plenty of gunk in the swing arm, I'll keep an eye it k.

Appreciating money is tight, but why don't you talk to your local BMW shop? If you take the FD off and just hand it to them the cost might not be as bad as bringing them the whole bike. If you leave them some time to do it that might help as well. Otherwise just bring it to them for loosening that nut and bring it back to them to tighten? Quite a few workshops are not too difficult in my experience, just ask around.
