I've removed them successfully by using a jewelers screwdriver to pry the leaves back away from the post they are anchored against. It destroys the fastener, but you really want to use a new one anyway.

if you can pry one edge up . then a good set of side cutters can cut through the outer flat section of the fastener , yes it destroys it but also widens the section allowing easy removal with just a twist to widen the whole thing ... you do save the plastic bolt section from too much damage doing it this way
