Hi fellas, its been a while since I posted, and need some assistance, as usual.  The '88 K100RS SE is now running well and buffed up.  I took it on it's maiden voyage last weekend, scooting down a deserted road along a local river, enjoying the free revving machine, feeling quite chuffed.  I looked down to discover my left side mirror was suddenly missing.  I turned around on the deserted road and located the mirror on the far shoulder, so stopped to turn around again and retrieve it.  The only car I'd seen on the deserted road passed by me at that moment, moving over a bit onto the shoulder to give me some room.  Though I appreciated the courtesy, it also took his outboard wheels directly over the somehow heretofore unscathed reclining mirror.  Both wheels.  Did I mention this was a deserted road?  Now the mirror looks like something from a sideshow fun house.  I'm sure I can see around corners with it, but feel it could really use a replacement.  However, where to find one?  Can anyone suggest a supplier, or does someone have a used one they would sell?  So far I am coming up dry.

It appears that BMW is no longer supplying mirrors(or the turn signal lenses) for the RS.  Best bet is to befriend a cafe hacker.

Another option I have seen is to ditch the RS mirror assemblies and replace them with bar mounted mirrors and aftermarket turn signals.  It will require some body work to fair in the old mounting surfaces, and the wind protection for your hands will be gone, but the photo I saw looked rather attractive, and even made the RS fairing look a bit more streamlined and less bulky.

Thanks .75.  The café racer builder angle could be a winner.  Definitely don't want to mess with the original design and change out mirrors etc.  The factory designed it this way and they obviously knew exactly what they were doing with all components.  Obviously....  Anyhow, I'd like to keep it stock.

good to hear that its on the road clubbie '

there is sure to be someone here with a spare

don't know about the plastic indicator lens though ...seems they are getting very scarce on the ground now (for the right ones )

would love to make a mould for both sides , to remake them

there was a good discussion about installing an lanyard through the fairing , to the mirror , to prevent the loss ...erm some time ago now

good luck

I have tethered both my mirror pods to the bike using stainless fishing leads.  I'm sure any strong string etc. will do the trick.
I'm thinking it was just the mirror that popped off rather than the entire pod.  You're right, they are getting very hard to find.
I got two of the last brand new factory OEM pods from beemerboneyard.com a couple of years ago.  They were perfect until YESTERDAY when I dropped the bike in my driveway and broke my turn signal lens.  Another tough thing to find.
Try the boneyard site and then cafe/hacker/destroyer-of-beautiful-motorcycles types.

Went for a 500 km ride around the south Vancouver Island loop yesterday (after I epoxied the turn signal lens).  Perfect weather.  Pretty soon we can go for that Mount Baker ride!

It's an outrage that BMW refuses to sell safety related parts for their motorcycles.

It would be a gold mine for someone in Germany to get into BMW purchasing and track down the tooling for parts.  You could make a fortune just selling parts for what BMW charges.

I had a business acquaintance who purchased old tooling from OEM auto parts suppliers and used it to make authentic plastic and metal repair parts for antique automobiles.  He started out as a machinist at a GM plant and last I heard he had three homes around the US and Caribbean and two airplanes to get around to them.  And there is no need to talk about his collection of classic antique cars.

Nvboy is correct, it's just the mirror glass required. After I reread my post I realized I hadn't made it clear. Local supplier can obtain it at $105!!  Hoping I can do better...

Follow up on the mirror thing.  My supplier is having a hard time getting the replacement mirror.  For now I had a glass shop cut a piece of mirror and fit it into the old smashed up backing.  Looks great.  However, as has been mentioned, the original mirror glass is slightly convex, the replacement is flat, so it's a bit different than the original right side reflection.  But I've solved this for now...

Not sure about the RS mirror bot the RT/LT is on a ball and socket to pivot.

Do NOT lubricate the connection when you try to fit a new mirror......it will float about and not stay in focus...not to mention easier to fall out. Clean the ball and socket with a cloth but nothing more and wipe clean to make sure no residues of any kind are left on it.

Your bike with the bar mounted mirrors and small turn signals looks great!  Looks very much like the one I was talking about in my earlier post.

Thanks. Only the shipping made Aeroflow screen way too expensive so I had to look for something in Europe - but in my opinion the one I found, by French SECDEM, looks even better than Aeroflow's- and is significantly cheaper with just 149 EUR vs $ 285 or $ 340 how much Aeroflow screens cost

That German site is excellent - just working out an arrangement for a replacement mirror (many choices) - thanks! Very Happy

Update: bought a pair of mirrors, very good pricing ($86 CAD with shipping) - took about 2 weeks.  Covered the old mirror with 2" wide clear tape and just levered it off in chunks (all held together by the tape).  Took longer to remove the double-backed tape left behind, but managed to scrape most of it off then remove the residual with a rag and paint thinner.  The new glass went on perfectly (four strips of 1/2" wide double-backed tape included).  It's been on there for about 500 miles - all good like new Smile
