Hello, I'm from southern-central Connecticut and about a month ago I bought a stripped-down 1985 K100RT parts bike that had been sitting for a while.


It came with a "cafe fairing" front and all the luggage, plus some random plastics.. so I took it from there.

I was originally going to make it a winter project and take my time getting it running and in top shape, but I got carried away and ended up completing the entire thing in a month...

The bike had been sitting for 6 years and wasn't a runner beforehand, since it had been laid down at about 40mph (apparently). It started up with some gas, new fuses and an oil change. These bikes have my utmost admiration for the technology and quality that was put into the design. 





I hope to lend some help and learn at the same time here!

Resurrecting a wreck and making her look good as a cafe racer gets my thumbs up (taking a reasonable quality runner and stripping her down does not, no matter what the end product looks like!).

Looks good Cromwave, but, in common with many 'cafe' jobs, your petrol cap is fitted the wrong way round.

There is a water drain hole on the left side of the petrol cap which gets blocked off when the cap is fitted incorrectly, so the cap recess will fill with water when it rains.

Good eye, when I got the bike the key was buggered up and drilled. So I sealed it with a rubber grommet and a carriage bolt and then flipped the cap so it doesn't fly up (by chance)

I noticed the hole when I did it and drilled it on the other side of the cap so it still works and drains.

The existing drain hole is for water that gets caught in the cap recess. There's a pipe connected inside which drains externally to a collection cup under the tank where it gets funneled to the rear of the bike. If you just drilled a hole on the other side, you may have water draining directly into your tank unless you've somehow connected the internal plumbing up to it.

I meant to specify that I cut the hole in the cap so when it was rotated 180, it no longer covered the hole that drains under the tank. I remember seeing the cup when I took the tank off and put 2+2 on it.
