Hi espresso
I think I have a battery on its way out. Could you tell me what the optimum reading while testing the battery should be, am getting a reading of 12.54 is this good or bad?

Cheers

Pat.

Hey Pat!

You should do the batterie reading 2 hours or better a day after driving or charging, so the reading is more realistic.
12.54 Vol sounds like a good healthy batterie. Could have up to 12.8 - 13 Vol if super duper.

Some more info
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_battery
[th]Open-circuit voltage[/th][th]Approximatecharge[/th][th]Relativeacid density[/th][th]12 V[/th][th]6 V[/th]
12.66 V6.32 V100%1.265 g/cm3
12.35 V6.22 V75%1.225 g/cm3
12.10 V6.12 V50%1.190 g/cm3
11.95 V6.03 V25%1.155 g/cm3
11.70 V6.00 V0%1.120 g/cm3
If a batterie is faulty or OK you can normally only test under load, meaning ignition is on and the motor is of.
But the normal test should do it for you.

Cheers

Just measure the batterie without load, the result will tell you enough For now.

Something to read and watch for cold winter evening :-)
