"Where should I begin..." - It all started as a small project of replacing fuel lines and servicing rear shock. And (not the 1st time in my bike history...) things got a little out of hand.

That rear brake disc is much older than the bike, these discs was prone to crack
between the holes and the outer circumference.

It was changed to non drilled rear disc during -85.

With the number 88 on a German bike, people are gonna think you're a Neo-Nazi.  Evil or Very Mad  (That's how they refer to "Heil Hitler" since H is the 8th letter of the alphabet.  Learned that on a documentary show a few years back.)

I'm gonna drink some whiskey, watch some American motorsports or a movie while using my old computer, playing at the same time some Christian music..

Yes, wiki says "Modern Nazis use the number 88 as an abbreviation for the salute Heil Hitler.[3] The letter H is eighth in the alphabet, whereby 88 becomes HH. Like other Nazi symbols, the use of the number 88 in this meaning is banned in Germany." but still a reality check needed... Is a nineteen-eighty-eight model and I am 99% sure at least here in Finland nobody will think I am any Adolf Jr humming Ride of the Valkyries when riding past villages (now Lt-Colonel Kilgore must have been a nazi character, though!). And if I go to Germany, it'll be with a different bike.

Being from the US, where Ks weren't introduced until 85, I've never seen a rear rotor vented like that.

Seems strange though that the similarly vented front rotors don't have a history of cracking.

(Not doubting you, just an observation.)

I would guess that the reason that this did happen was that the rear discs
have less cooling from the wind, a few degrees added from the engine and
the final drive.........combined with worn disc which heats up quicker and
isn't that strong against deforming from the heat.....and a owner who is
very happy to use the rear brake...a lot.

Just a FYI post here. Nothing exciting but I ordered a set of front and rear rotors from a non OEM source. Top grade discs but just one part number for both front and rear -all the same, all vented

The K1100 has vents but is a thicker disc. Probably about 1.5 - 2mm thicker and I have never heard of one of them cracking.

Correct . .  I just got the discs only, not anything else. Three identical discs. My fronts were buckled and the rear was fast approaching min. thickness so replaced all three. One order number, one part number. When I saw the order I queried it. They assured me it was right and if not then I did not have to procure them. I did and it was

Sorry no pictures, Rick........early 1100 LT's didn't have drilled rear disc.
And call it vented is a bit wrong I think, vented discs looks quite different.

That they don't crack that easy because of the different drilling pattern,
but of course as you say, more meat also helps.

All manufacturers do some strange things and the different thickness discs front and rear when making them all the same thickness is so easy.  Maybe the rear ones were the discs that had to be ground back too far to use on the front.

Cool

I had to change my front disc's some time back for crack's, mind they where on the limit for thickness.

I like the look of this project she should look nice with the guzzi fairing always loved those le mans mk 1's, and a blast from the past mentioning an old name like unity equip had a few parts off them for me old Triumphs when god was a lad.

Keep up the good work look forward to more pic's.

Looking excellent mate,

I like original cafes but lately have been spewing every time someone cuts up a nice K [or anything really - the hipsters in Sydney are going to transform every cheap bike from the 70's and 80's into a bloody homogeneous pea soup.] (as there are plenty of shitboxes around) but I really am liking the direction of this one.

On the topic of rear discs.....I have 3 styles....

I have the original 84 slotted ones pictures above,
I have a plain, smooth disc
I have a drilled disc (circular holes not slots)        <-----this is the one Im using as it looked to be in the best nick. Where do these fit in with the factory?

These came of an 84, 85, 86.

That is the same as I have on the rear of my K1100 and the paralever set up that is going into the chookie so I presume it is standard to the K1100 as that is where I seem to see them.

All of the rotors will work on all of the classic K bikes.  The vented ones came out in 93 on the K11RS and 94 on the K11LT.  With the exception of needing an ABS ring for ABS bikes, they are all interchangeable.  I run vented ones on all of my K bikes, including my 93 LT, an 86 K100, my paralevered 86 K75 turbo and my K75 "Frankenbrick."  On the 86 K100 without ABS and on the turbo K75 I removed the toothed part of the ABS ring to save a little on weight.

Really interested in this build as you are following a similar route to the one I have planned. An excess of parts, almost sufficient to build another bike, mean I have the basics already and I'd spotted the various BSK goodies. Not cheap but the quality looks superb.

looking forward to watching the progress.

Cheers

Nice job. Tank looks great.  Do you plan to clearcoat it?

Probably not; with time sooner or later air / moisture creeps under clearcoat and then is hard work to fix it. Guess it'll be lots of polishing wax and elbow grease...

My experience of aluminium, not to coat it but keep it polished and coated with a good wax polish. Wax repels the water well and stops it getting marked.

The tank looks really good.
Might be worth considering applying an internal coating to the tank while you can.
Both of my last two K's developed holes. The '84 RT had a pin hole in the base of the tank and the '89 LT developed a hole of a few mm in the side of the tank, beside where the fuel pump lives.
Not an unheard of problem.

Guess original instruments will do if I drop the brackets by few centimeters... I HATE electric works and will avoid them whenever i can (just changed the brushes "just in case" to starter and generator, but that's about as far as it gets...) and specially idea of soldering relays and diodes to get the neutral light / starter work right doesn't sound that tempting. And hey, it fits behind the screen so not that bad!  Very Happy

I had the same dilemma but kept the originals simply because of the sheer amount of info they give off and the compact design for everything. you got revs, speed, gears, indicator, choke light etc all in one simple box all worked out for you. just plug and play. as I understand it the only thing giving a bit of trouble now and then is intermittent speedometer which can be fixed if need be

Also, the little plastic gears that drive the odometer and trip meter tend to disintegrate. Replacements can be found.

And if you leave a K out in the hot sun for extended periods of time then the faceplates (since they're black and adsorb heat) will warp causing the needles to stick.

I figured out an easy fix for this though - pull "the guts" out and then out put some spacers in the upper inner corners of the faceplates to push them back down.

I'm still not understanding why BMW didn't consider a 1/4 faring on the K100. What, too sporty? Reserved for sport bikes only? :bball:

What about the quarter faring from the R90s OR R100s of the 70s or early 80s? They look great, provide the necessary cover for instruments, etc. and are functional. Not that the solution here is any better or worse, just that with all the manifestations of sprint fairings, sporty farings, etc. for the early K bikes--why is there no 1/4 faring for project bikes as this. Go figure.
