Could someone out there help me with information for my 87 RT. The side stand has 2 springs attached to it on a pivot point each. However the springs are then attached together onto one pivot on the bike. I looked at my 83 basic and the stand is different but still has two pivot points, but connects to triangular plate...2 holes for the 2 springs and the third hooks onto the bike.
All this came about as there a fair deal of play in the stand, so I had a new bush made where the stands bolts onto the bike.Should there be a similar set for the 87 bike that exists on the 83?

I will hazard a guess as I have both versions.

The 92LT came with a clutch lever release for the side stand, pull in the clutch lever and the side stand is retracted by it. Some people disable this but I found it a good feature.

The 84RT when I took it out for a test ride nearly killed me. When I went into a petrol station to haul it up on the main stand for a look underneath the side stand would not stay down. The plate the two springs attached to was a boomerang/triangular shape and there was a raised pin that this would come in contact with as you lowered the side stand  to use the springs to force the side stand into the raised position. You had to push the stand out to its limit and then lean the bike onto it while keeping it down with your left foot. A recipe for disaster. Of course the idea was then when you lifted the bike off the side stand it automatically retracted. So I couldn't get off the K and had to ride it back to the vendor's house and get him to get it down.

The deal was done on the basis that he would cut the pin back to below the plate the springs were mounted on so it would not retract. So a frantic search for a hacksaw and the end result was successful.

I think you are missing the plate off the 87 RT. The three bikes in my garage at the moment, an 86 RT, 87 LT, and 93 K75RT all have plates between the springs and the frame. The 86 has the "spring up" side stand and a different plate, the other two have the clutch retract mechanism.

As also mentioned earlier in this thread, the plate on the self retracting
system have a triangular shape ....the one used on clutch aided retracting
system is more shaped like a boomerang.

Another thing too, a very interesting on e.

I got a new rear tyre fitted at the Honda dealership in Cork, happily located next door to one that sells motorrad iators. They do an excellent tyre fitting service at good prices.

When they brought the bike back out I was talking to the guy who knew a fair bit about the Ks, smoking etc. But, he told me there was a right hand side stand available for them. It seems this was on some police models. He is around long enough to know them. So, has anyone come across this before? I know it was common on some smaller post office bikes to have one on the right hand side but I have never heard of it on the K.

Any signs yet of coming back into the fold?

Thank you for the reponses. When I bought the 83 I disabled the spring system that retracted the side stand as soon as weight is lifted from the side stand. My 87 came to me without the clutch release set up and now, obviously, without the boomerang plate. Now where do I find someone in Australia who knows about boomerangs?

If you throw out a question it will come back at you with an answer.

I suspect that someone will have that plate lying around somewhere or it could easily be made or posted real cheap from up here. When I disabled the spring system on the 84RT I cut the pin that caused the plate to make the stand retract and the plate now just slides over the stub. I wonder are they interchangeable if the retraction system is not being used...?

I will pull off the boomerang on the 83 and fit it to the 87 to see if all is well. I have technology...I have a drill and an angle grinder...what else does one need?...oh and I have a friend down the road with plenty of metal off cuts. This plan will be put into action next week.....thanks.

stan I found that the bush is sometimes too thick to keep a tight tolerance of lateral movement of the side stand ..play when the through bolt tightens the whole assembly .

I took about 1/2  a mm off the bush height ...which let the jaws of the sidestand sit closer to the subframe of the sidestand mount point  and greatly reducing the play .

hope that helps a little

just what I did that made a difference

Thanks Charlie. I just made a boomerang using the 83s one as a template. All good untill I found the springs that had been used were now too long...angle grinder out...shorter springs. I will check it all out next week and may use your solution.

According to Stephen Fry and the QI elves, a boomerang that doesn't come back( remember, the ones for scaring birds come back, the hunting ones actually hit things so don't) is called a Kylie.

That is it BlaKey.....I have made exactly like that...well it looks like that and have modified the springs to suit. Amazing what you find is missing because you assume that because your bike doesnt have it...it is not needed.
