I once had some nylon cable ties that had become brittle; each time I tried to pull them tight, they broke. An industrial chemist friend said that nylon has a water content and it can dry out. He suggested soaking the ties in water for a couple of days and hey ho, they're still supple after a couple of years.
Now I'm not suggesting that you soak your speedo in a bucket of water.......
