Ambulance would be a good idea !!
Anyway, had a beer, called my brother and we did a team sweep of Ebay everywhere. A few in Germany but still very expensive.
Came up with this which I purchased this morning.

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-R-1100-SS-R1100SS-Headlight-/221617119576?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item339968e158#ht_24wt_1276

Quite a difference in price

Thanks for suggestions

Craig

OEM part number 63 12 2 306 802 is for the North American market (also known as SAE), 63 12 2 306 715 is for RH markets and 63 12 2 306 716 is for 'other' LH markets.

For your edification, just because Max BMW (or any online BMWNA dealership presence) say they have it doesn't mean it's actually in their stock on the shelf. It just means that they've automatically scanned BMW's two US warehouses and it's in one of those.

There's one (US version) in the Stockton, California warehouse and it's a bit spendy at $592.39 plus tax. :pirat:  BTW, there's also only just one of that number in the Dingolfing, Germany warehouse, BMW's main CDC.

If its a RH can it be adjusted?

My understanding is NO... If a bike is brought in from Europe or USA, the headlight is changed before a wof and vin can be done...

Holly smoke, new price is right up there, have a 11s myself, has a Ventura light protection guard on it to keep the stone damage out hopefully...

You should be able to get a plastics welding shop to repair the broken tab... good luck with it.

Since you did buy it from UK, it's a good chance it's a LH. (which I'll guess is what you need).

Just an update on the headlight for any interested parties.
The RH and LH must be the factory setting of the beam and labeled as such.
I had a good look in the back of the lamp and on the low beam side noticed two cut slots in the reflector and three screws on sliding slots. I loosened the three screws enough to enable me to pull the reflector up over the cut slot it was in, turn it so it sat in the other cut slot and the screw sliding slots had slid to the other end, tightened up....changed the beam from left to right.

Possibly a standard for all the BMW bike lights?

I did that with a car headlight recently. I bought a new one as the reflector was bad but did the conversion myself. A lot of components are in fact made identical but in a way that can be assembled differently.

Having swapped headlights on a TVR imported from UK to Germany (a friend's), its my observation and understanding that a main component of left vs right headlight is the pattern of the small 'lenses' that make up the front glass of the headlight. This obviously applies to older headlights, with many more recent units having just clear plastic or glass lenses. In this case a bulb shield and the reflector shape will serve the left/right purpose.
I don't know the R1100S situation, but if the headlight glass has the small lenses, then the glass would need to be changed, or the whole headlight if the glass isn't separate.

Bill

Agreed Bill,
I always thought it was to do with the glass pattern, but I blew up a picture of both LH and RH for the BM and could not see any difference.
What I did note at the bottom right of both was the double ended arrow...maybe indicated that can be a LH or RH?

Usually the reflector itself also is slightly different from LHD to RHD.

Beside that, the R1100S have a DE headlight for the low beam where the
light pattern is provided by a shield between the reflector and the lens,
this shield must be different from LHD to RHD.

Wanted BMW R1100S Head Light Img_0013

Image of my headlight. We drive on the left in Oz. (Excuse the bugs.)

On the left of the image (aiming to the right of the road) the 'lenses' direct the light right and down, away from the eyes of oncoming drivers. The 'lenses' on the other side cover a bigger height range.

To make the cutoff, there is a shield in the bulb, limiting the low beam light that goes to the bottom of the reflector, which would then reflect up. There is no cover above the low beam filament, so lots of light is directed towards the top of the reflector, which largely goes down.

For those who drive on the wrong side of the road, the pattern of the 'lenses' is reversed L to R.

Bill

And also as earlier mentioned the reflector itself is different from RHD to LHD.

But the R1100S has a DE headlight for the low beam which is a quite different animal.
After some research I have found out that it's designed so it's rather easy to
change this from RHD to LHD (and viceversa).
By loosening a screw and rotate the reflector and the earlier mentioned shield
together as one unit a few degrees in the direction needed.

Actually, the H4 bulb holder is not set vertically, so the shield is offset to the right or left depending on RHD or LHD.

Finally got the headlight. Arrived on Thursday after nearly two months trip from UK.  Had arrived once but was sent all the way back because NZ post didn't know which business, out of the three small ones at the address, it was for.

Anyway, way happy just to get it.  Rushed home with it, opened the box.....smashed to pieces Sad
