Wow that is some post and a great one to share. A fantastic route and of course great weather. How long did it take? I mean ride time, not the 14 days.

We don't have peaks that high in Ireland, we don't go over 1,000m!. Our roads are even lower.

I've covered a lot of Western Europe, but the Pyrenees and Spain has so far eluded me. Much as I would like to do it on a bike, my wife will insist on coming but will refuse to pillion. Car it will be.
Love the pictures.

4000km would take quite a while if you want to enjoy it properly.

Some of us are thinking of France at the end of May and we will probably be down as far as Bordeaux.  I have been across the north coast of Spain and spent some time sailing the north west coast of Spain too. Pyrenees are lovely and you got the perfect time for it.

So, you must come to Ireland.....but...it does rain sometimes so be prepared for it. We already know the RT and LT are the best bikes for wet weather.

Thanks for posting Kuk.  I may twist Olaf's arm in to travelling further south.

Bill, you know you want to do it.  We have sown the seed of an idea in your mind.  Don't fight it. It will only become more painful.  Just think May/June 2015, and you are half way there.   Cool

Dave.

I don't think I need much persuading. I have been down to Pyrenees and across the north coast of Spain on our camping holidays when kids and myself went. The incessant tolls in Spain were an annoyance as it's coins every time. But it is lovely.

Not sure any of the Irish Eccentrics need much persuading. Sgmayhew was very keen on coming along, he just sent me an email yesterday to that effect. Comberjohn also on for it. Bikerboy and Jude [aka the Hooligan Pensioner] are always keen to travel South but their bikes have an inbuilt aversion to travelling North. I have a feeling they too would have an interest as Jude enjoyed our riding style.

A nice base to work from is good too, maybe not moving tents about every day.

My own view of nice trips is not being too rigid about having a tight up programme as weather and other things can bugger it up. May/June is good as nothing will be full or need pre-booking so we can stop when we feel is the right time or place. A breakdown is not the end of the world either. Lateral thinking is the key. My Dad years ago had his alternator pack up when we were going on holidays. in was about 9 or 10. Rather than cut the holiday short we headed off, towing the caravan, but brought a battery charger. At the other end he recharged it as needed and arranged to come back later in the week to get it sorted. That became a day trip for just the two of us and arrived back at the house in July to see my neighbour heading out in a school uniform- one of our classmates had died and he was heading to the funeral. Headed back down to the caravan for another few weeks.

Now from north west Spain to a meet up near Cap Ferret could be a nice run too. It would be possible to do Roscoff to Cap Ferret in one run but its 480 miles, about 430 on motorway. We always did it in one run in the car, but a big diesel tank meant only one [long] stop for food and refuel. On a K its got to be 3 stops for fuel but likely 4. The thing was we passed so many places we would have loved to visit!

Dave, much as I would like to, the plans are for Feb/Mar in NE France (daughter having baby #3), and 2nd half of year for a post retirement trip.
Les Voyages de TacKleur is bookmarked for my wife, who is a lifelong lover of France. I enjoyed it very much as well.

Kuk, it would be great, but getting my K100RT from Australia to Europe might be a problem. When I retire and have lots of money, buying another and leaving it at my daughter's place (Rodemack, France) might be nice. Always available then. A long way to the Pyrenees from next to Luxembourg.

At least if I have my own transport over there it would eliminate the inconvenience and annoyance when the car we borrowed from our son-in-law was stolen in Berlin. Our host assured us the area was safe. The Police assured us that the area we parked it was car theft central, and it would have been in Poland by the morning!
Bill

Bill,

I can give you contacts to buy a K100 in France and if you leave it at your daughter's place, I could run it for few thousand Ks every year(That's a favor because you belong to the forum My tour of the Pyrenees. 2014 652573 ). Your daughter lives about 40K from my house in France and since I am planning to spend the winter there when I retire (Hopefully in less than 2 years) we could share a bike....
Do you like the idea?

This forum is a wonderful fertile ground of ideas. Funny thing my daughter just moved to Antwerp for 2 years so more ideas. Like if you need that K100 to be ridden down to Nice I can get a flight back home, 10 minutes from the airport here! You can just arrive in Nice and pick up the K.

I am sort of joking, on a more serious note it would be great if that worked out for you, an opportunity to meet up. East meets west. Just had a long chat with 88KE about France 2015!

Do you like the idea?

Sounds like a great idea. Which town/village is your house in? Keeping it out of my son-in-law's hands might be a good idea. By his own admission, he doesn't think he should get a motorcycle as he would be tempted to ride it fast. His BMW toy cars (currently 540i) get driven at 200 to 240km/h.
I would appreciate a fellow forum member doing me the favour of riding a few thousand km for me to keep it exercised.Wink
I retire in the middle of next year. Contacts for buying a K would be good.

Funny you mention Nice, as the parents of my son-in-law live in Antibes, and you can see the planes taking off and landing at Nice airport from their rooftop terrace. We usually visit them for some time when we are in France. A 900km drive from Rodemack.
Either way, I expect to spend more time in Europe than our annual visit after I retire. Meeting up with some of the forum folks would be really good. Crazy Frog might be the closest, but having driven about 30,000km in Europe, travelling is no problem for me. 0km on a bike, though.

Amazing what you find on this forum. A great place to be.

Bill

Antibes has very close connections with Cork and Kinsale......I ma sure they will know about it. Cork airport is 12 miles from Kinsale.....and the start of the Wild Atlantic Way......

Now that's a route for a K trip.

My house is in Lorry-les-Metz and it's only 41Kms from Rodemack.
The particularity of dealing with somebody from Australia is that now in Canada we are entering the winter and you are entering your summer season. I guess we will never meet if we want to spend our winter in France.

I also have a friend owning an apartment in Nice and she told me that I can use it if I want.

This is funny. We are on an English speaking forum and may have a few members meeting in France.

I have a big birthday in 2016.

Last one I went to my brother in New York.

For 2016 I would love a French meet up trip maybe late May early June but other times good too as long as its not the mid summer heat and bustle!.

I see some ideas coming together here, so lets see how that works out....

I want to spend at least one Christmas in Europe, and travel times will become more flexible after next year anyway. Would be good to meet up sometime.  Smile

Since may daughter has lived in Europe, I'm becoming much more international in my thinking. Meeting in France or Europe sounds great if times can coordinate.

My daughter spent 7 months working at a school in Metz during her university time, and that's where she met her French husband.

In 2016 I will be in France for the 100 yr commemoration of the battle of Fromelles, where my grandfather's brother was killed. That will be around July 19. We will certainly be in Europe for longer than that, but when and how long is still to be decided. As you say, the main tourist season is not a good time to be in much of Europe, so we will probably be there earlier and finish with Fromelles.

It would be really good if some meeting(s) can be worked out.

Bill

If everything is working according to my plans, end of June 2016 should be my official retirement time and I am planning a trip to Europe to celebrate.  Very Happy
