Just a straight yes or no will do, unless you have actually done it, then you can tell me what I would need to do

I have the option of getting my hands on a 2000 K1200RS written off by the insurance company for free.

Motor and box and drive train in VG cond

The question I have is obvious for modifiers

Will my K100 frame take it, if not what would I need to do to swap my K100 mill out out and insert the K1200 mill / drive train etc

Many thanks to all the wise ones

I am not sure if you have tried a engine exchange with the NZ certification before but I would say the hp increase would mean a full certification process to be legal even if its a bolt in.
I think from memory 1/4 increase in power is max.

Grab the bike and do the drive train swap for better wheel choice and sell the rest to fund your adventure and any other mods you have planned.

K 1200 swinging arm attaches to the frame and on the K100/1100 to the gearbox the answer is the engines will physically swap fairly easily but not the drive train.

Ah so its the 1100 that transforms not the 1200.
that will explain why Im having trouble finding a conversion thread.

I assume the box cant be swapped if doing a 1100 rear end swingarm.

Thanks for that. Enough to wet my appetite. So . .  the question now is exactly what would be required to do the match up / k1200 engine in to my current 89 K100 and end up with a 1200cc k100 ?

The K1200 6 speed gearbox and final drive will fit mechanically to the K engine, but the frame mounting for the gearbox does not work [its different] and would require frame modifications in the area where the number is stamped on the frame. I looked into this with a good friend over here but we had only discussed then engine to transmission/final drive work. The guys in Australia had already encountered the gearbox to frame mounting issue. I am not sure how you can overcome the modifications and having them certified but unless you can sort that one then its not really worth doing.

Presumably this would mean you could put the K1200 engine into the K100 frame [not sure if that works] but as far as I can see you will need the injection system and lots of wiring modifications to go with it.

The engine block is the essentially the same and to fit it to a K100/1100 the original clutch housing from the K100/1100 needs to be used. Electronics and fuel injection are a different subject.
On a K100/1100 the swinging arm attaches to the gearbox but on a K1200 the swinging arm attaches to the frame so major frame mods would need to be done to fit the 6 speed gearbox.
The first time I managed to get a good look at a K1200engine and gearbox I took one look and said no not impossible but too much stuffing around for the regs we have here.

Do I remember Rick G saying the internals from a 1200 final drive will fit our drive with different ratios? Better or worse I can't remember

You can put the gears from a paralever drive into the monolever with some very minor mods. I have a 2.62 ratio from a K1200RS in my K1100 and it's a direct swap and gets about 4.2lt/100km now as against about 4.7 before the swap.
The lowest ratio you can fit is a 2.53 from a R1200C.
Mind I still go for another gear quite often and revs are right on 4000 at 105kph which is below the tingle zone for me.

In my garage at the moment is a complete '02 K1200RS engine (TBs, ECU, wiring loom & all injection components) sans six speed gearbox which will be cradled from the top by a K100 frame, K11 five speed gearbox & K100 'bell housing,' Paralever, tank and seat. A Marzocchi front end, 17" five spoke wheels, K11 rear shockie, 305mm R1150GS brake discs and K11 four pot calipers, it will roll and stop on. In a coupla months, or over the Winter, I'll roll it out.

In Washington state no official department or authority will dictate that this 'motor' is too much for the chassis. There's no inspection of any sort. They don't need an engine number, for example. They're technically crude like that here. No TUV or MOT req'd in these here parts.

I am certain there'll be some definitive forum answers as well as some questions as the 'build' continues. Report to follow.

Why?

AFAIK you are perfectly happy with your Be Made. I have followed your thread and commend you on it.

I shall attempt to clarify my statement for those of thin skin. The authorities and regulations (in this state) are technically crude like that. If you or someone you know work for the gub'mint my condolences.

As to why . . I would have thought the 6 speed and the extra 30 horsepower would make the conversion an obvious choice.

. . . ."TAKE THE INSURANCE WRITE OFF "For free" and make it right, or your version of, you have the ability."

No.

I have one k100 bike and k100 spares enough to see me out. I don't want or need 2 bikes but would take the mill , drivetrain and wiring loom, electrics etc and happily transplant if I can get enough info which says it can be done. and it looks like I am getting plenty now.

Other thing is, I did not spend 3 - 400 hours and LOTS of gold on the one I have, fully rebuilding it, replacing all the bearings, paint etc etc just to end up with either another one which looks the same (so . .  2 bikes rideable) or another different looking one. Having looked at the styling and design the k1200rs is not as easily modified like an old K is so . . . pass on making a 1200 right, or my version of it. If anything it will be the k100 to k100/1200 powerplant conversion or nothing

The main problem for me is, at the moment, here in NZ we are coming into our riding season NOW. I wont be taking my K off the road over summer to do this but I do want as much info as I can get on it

This bit is not an issue. I have powder coated the frame and it is already registered with the frame number on the alloy plate that got de-riveted and re-attatched after the powder coat, which matches the number on the bell housing. I would retain the bell housing and relocate the plate as needed.

Seems our mechanics here at the bike shops are not overly fussy in this department (at least my one isn't . . lets hope he does not retire or die before me !!) ::-))

The engine number is on the sump section not the bell housing but you would retain the bell housing and attach the 1200 engine to the front of that.

Thanks for that.

I will obviously have to think and rethink continuously this whole idea until I make a firm decision as to whether to leave it alone or make a major works out of it
