Took delivery of a 1997 K100RT with 94000 miles on the clock a couple of weeks ago.

Already done over 600 miles and performed a few quick fixes; oil change and replaced the screen mounting bolts.   Next step is the diff and gear oil change along with spark plugs and coolant change.

What's next?  A complete strip down of the engine after the winter and a full respray of the bodywork  Shocked 

Is that optimism?

Optimism? That's pessimism.

A complete strip down of the engine?? At 94,000 miles. Someone has been telling you porkies. No way. Sure its only run in and they last forever. My LT had similar miles on it when I got it in 2010. The only bit of the engine that's been touched since was spark plugs and oil filter. The usual fluid changes etc etc.

By all means clean it up and polish it, respray if you want but no one here will be suggesting stripping the engine. The home page has a section on what to do if you have just bought a K. Have a read of it and come back here if you have any problems or questions. The guys are great for helping anyone.

Someone from another part of the country I know very well (born & bred in Lee on Solent) and lived in Fareham (first house) for a few years.

The gear and final drive oils are really cheap and easy to do, and give you confidence that they are in good condition/at the right level. Spark plugs are a doddle too. The coolant change is not hard, but probably will need you to remove bits of fairing and the fuel tank. I don't know why they put the radiator filler in such an inaccessible place, but it's not a job that needs doing often. While you are doing that job, it would be worth checking/cleaning up the radiator cap - it is a surprisingly clever bit of kit (more than just a cap) - if the valves are scaled up or the seal swollen, it won't do what it should do and you'll end up with "pipe suckage" (put that in the search engine)

While the tank is off, you'd be wise to deoxit/clean up all electrical connectors that you can get too - including the main earth point to the frame. Loads of post on electrical issues that stem from dodgy earths and dirty contacts.

I agree with 92KK - an engine rebuild should not be necessary - do the basics and get out and ride and enjoy the bike. Unlike some parts of the world, we don't really get an off season because of the weather - that means major jobs like engine overhauls just never fit into the ride calendar and only get done when she no go no more!

Anyway, enough waffle - put some bike details (VIN etc.) into your signature block and upload some pics. We all like pics!
I get down you way several times a year (family still around there), so hope to see you out and about.

Oh...and i forgot to mention my and 92KK's favourite subject - tyres. Check their age - if they are over 3 - 4 years, get some new rubber (and scrub them in for 100 miles or so before you ride too adventuously). Old tyres make the K notoriously bad at handling - even if the tread looks good. (again loads of posts on that subject too).

Well put....sound advice.

And another little gem, the fuel lines perish and are best replaced with proper BMW line, its cheap. Make them a little longer and next time you wont need to disconnect them to get the tank off......make them long enough that you can lift the rear of the tank to access the electrical relay box or slide the tank back so you can access the radiator cap without having to depressurise and disconnect them. Make sure you put the insulation back on the pipes and check the insulation under the tank.

That little black pipe from the radiator back to the plastic expansion bottle on the right hand side can perish, replace it. Again its very cheap.

As for the tyres......they make a tremendous difference.

+1 and 100% agree. If you don't have a specific reason to pull it down don't touch it. 94K is the bottom end of the normal range and there are bricks that have done well over 500K.

welcome Number14. agree do routine stuff, the bricks fly. A corrola thermostat 85C a good investment when you do the coolant. agree re wiring comments, Mine stopped once in the bondu, corrosion in a plug - heating melted insulation up a wire, they are tiny wires not like the Lucas Brit bikes.
If you kow of a good K let me know, I may be over for work soon?
