Fellow K-bike enthusiasts:  

The bike starts, and seems to run! 
While under the fuel tank, I discovered two plugs that don't seem to do anything.  They are black.  Three or four wire, and one two wire, and they seem to be interconnected somehow.  Everything seems to work on this machine, although it doesn't charge correctly.  The above wires got hot, and their insulation melted. This was repaired with duct tape.  

What are these plugs for?  Can the bare wires simply be removed?  I don't want to tear into the harness, as it seems to be in nice condition.  Curiously, most of the electrical stuff on the bike actually works.

Any help will be appreciated.  I'll post pictures soon.

I would guess that it's the wiring for the heated grips, it's a integrated resistance
wire for the low temp setting.......which often gets hot and melts the insulation.

This machine does have heated grips.  They are exposed and rotting.  I'd like to make them work again.
I'll look at the diagrams again.
Is there a way to repair these wires?  Solder would melt, correct?

direct crimping is the best

perhaps some fiberglass insulation sleave would do the job

there is what the industry calls v75 rated insulation ....particularly good for heating type environments   
bit hard to find in a flexible type cable ....but if you search ... who knows ?

You can also buy this wiring (with the resistance wire) with connectors
as a single part for ~ 60 USD, BMW part #61 12 1 459 263.

You can't solder to the old wires in the grips. They're made of Constantin which won't take solder. As Charlie says, crimping is the only way.
