Last summer I picked up a 68K 86 K100RS for $750 becuase the PO couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start other than with starter fluid in the air box but I figured that since it ran with starter fluid that it couldn't be too hard to fix. When I got it home I pulled off the gas cap and noticed that one of the hose clamps for the fuel filter was missing and the pressure from the fuel pump had blown the hose off. Five minutes and a hose clamp later and I had a running bike. It came with a brand new Westco AGM battery and new tires so I definitely got my money's worth.
It had some minor rash on the right side and mirror that I could've fixed but, seeing as I already have a few RS faired bikes, I decided to make it a lighter "city bike" by redoing it with some extra parts I had lying around - a K75C fairing, a radiator shroud from a standard K100 and a K75 belly pan. I spent much of last July replacing just about everything on it with either new or lower mile parts. MAF, TBs, coils, spark plug leads, 50A alternator, ICU, L-Jet, fuel lines etc... I also swapped in some newer forks with a fork brace since the early K100RSs had the one piece fender and no fork brace. Stainless brake lines, blah, blah blah....
Earlier this year I decided to replace the stock 31:11 final drive with a 32:10 K75 FD which, although it bumps up the RPMS a bit, makes it zippier than a stock K100 so I'm glad I tried that.
Anyhow, the thing that amazes about about this bike is how well it starts. Despite my having only installed a 15A AGM battery to save a little weight and a few pennies, from bone cold it starts nearly instantly without choke or anything. It's the 18th of the 19 Ks I've owned and I've never seen one this eager to run.
