Hello, a friend gave me a 1985 K100 with a broken tranny. This will be my 5th bike that I've rebuilt, the previous 4 were all Hondas.

Picked up a tranny from Ohio, hope it's ok, apparently good, we'll see.

Great community here, hope to add to it.

Thank you all for the kind words, I will post some pictures soon. Started the process of going through the bike from top to bottom... lots of work ahead.

I rode a R1200RTP for 4 years at work, so I am hooked on the BMW... now to start buying parts.

Darn work keeps getting in the way of fun.

Took me a while to figure out how to put pictures in the forum, but overall, I'm happy with the look and condition of the bike. Before it hits the road, need to replace the transmission, check and lube the splines, check the clutch, which apparently was ok. I know the previous owner, he took care of it mechanically, just needs some TLC and paint. The last owner's bro-in-law left it out for a year in the sun on the side stand bleaching out the red paint on one side of the bike and now it looks like a strawberry blonde on one side and a red head on the other. (The guy who gave me the bike is a ginger (redhead) so the name RED has a double meaning), waiting for transmission... oil changes all around including final drive unit.

Another Baja Red K...very nice.

Good company for Becky on the forum. Becky is in England but keen to travel and currently off in Germany on her K100LT in the company of another mysterious K with a DK label on it. I am sure we will hear from her/them soon.

So, the postman brought the transmission today... not too happy about the 35 lb package...  :-)


Any comments on the input spline? I never realized the splines were so small!!

Time to do some cleaning and open it up and look for damage... I might have to take the innards from this unit and put them in the original transmissions case to get rid of the hole in the case. Should be able to see if it really only has 23000 miles on it from wear I hope.


Wish I could get over to England for a ride... would be fun... we have lots of lovely mountain rides here in British Columbia, just not as many small towns to visit as in England and Europe.


Baja Red? Is that the colour... won't be staying that colour for long... nice bright red to come.

That hole is always there but has a plug in it as you need to use the hole during assembly. PO probably has a small plug hiding in a black hole somewhere.

Odd, only silicone in the hole, looking around at other pics, it looks like there's supposed to be a screw in plug. I'll have to look at the gearbox on the bike once it's off.

Based upon the lack of comments on the splines, I guess they appear ok?

Put up some side on views of the spline as they can look good from front on and be very worn back further.
Give them a clean to get a clear pic too

Your wish is my command...  from what I can see, the 23000 miles on transmission looks very likely... on the super close up of the input spline, the machining marks haven't even worn off yet...

What was left of the gear oil was nice and clean and the drain plug didn't have any shavings or flakes, only a tiny bit of very very very fine metal powder which would be normal wear and tear. Turning both shafts are nice and smooth, no binding or gritty feel, sounds good too... I'm going to replace all of the gearbox seals and gaskets while it's off.

Found the same in the rear drive unit, very clean gear oil and same on the drain plug. 

So far so good... next, take off old gear box and inspect clutch assembly. I'll order a rear engine seal while I'm at it...

You couldn't want for better splines than that.
The screw in plug is just below the red square you marked and is for the detent ball and spring on the selector mechanism.
That hole is a straight sided hole and the plug is like a frost/expansion plug in a cylinder block.  You put a stud in there as a temporary measure to hold the detent pawl until the box is assembled then remove the stud and tap the plug in flush.

Thank you, the plug for the detent pawl is missing, I might use a very fine threaded brass hex-head plug in it as a permanent easy to replace solution. 

Thank you for your advice, nice to have your opinion. I did an old 87 VT750 Honda shaft drive once, but the splines are much bigger and don't have the problems with wear, not as much of a problem... couldn't get a muffle for that bike and had to make one, but everything else was available.

Photo after putting it back together after a complete engine rebuild, cleaning, re-chroming and new mufflers I built, all due to a stuck exhaust valve hit the top of a piston, sold it to buy a truck so I could take the kids camping:

I'm impressed at the extent of the part available for the K bikes. Going to be using MOTOBIN a bunch, the US/Canadian prices don't compare even with shipping and handling add to the MOTOBIN pricing. The BMW dealer in Vancouver charges both arms and both leg for parts, and their repair shop rate is through the roof.

Rather repair it myself anyways... much more fun.

I've written tech manuals and am a semi-pro photographer (part of the job) so hope to add a few how to's to the forums in return for everyone's help.
