Hi, bought an old beauty K100LT from my nephew recently as it wasn't "cool enough" for him, he's now flying around on a Kawasaki Ninja and welcome to it!
It's a wee bit tired, but seems mechanically sound and has 42,000 miles on it.
I'm 58 and had many, mostly Japanese, bikes through my 20s but am lovin being back on a saddle. Much more careful driver these days of course.
I'm lucky in having some of what must be the most glorious biking roads in the world (West Coast of Scotland) near me and been a few glorious runs already.
What I know about mechanics I could write on a postage stamp, far less a fag packet, so may be dipping in often for advice. In fact I have a question for now - what sort of mpg should I be expecting (roughly) from the K100? Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Andy, welcome to the funny farm.
Kawasaki Ninjas are a good place for the young ones, I can't bend far enough to get to the bars so they are welcome to them.
As for MPG around 50 is fairly good some get better but they are the ones you take rabbiting and send down the holes.

I didn't even try the Ninja!!

Hi Andy, as an LT owner ( my second one)  i hope you get many years of pleasure form her.
I have had my current bike two months now, and halfway through doing the jobs she needed, nothing drastic but mostly age not mileage related.
They seem to fairly easy to work on and most things are accessible.

You're right, some cracking roads up the west coast to the North of you...and the Stirling straights to the East. Sadly when i lived in Helensburgh (I returned south in 2004) I didn't have any bike, let alone a K bike. Towing a 5.5m dive RIB behind a K100 would have been quite a challenge though.

Uploading picture - go to "Profile" on the top tabs, select "Avatar" tab and follow the on screen directions to upload one direct from your computer. In the same place, select the "Signature" tab and you can enter your bike details and any witty comment (or otherwise) so that they automatically show when you do a post / reply to a post etc.

Alternatively, for bigger pics use the tool bar at the top of the message block - either "insert image" if you already have a URL or "host an image" - you can then upload the pic using the www.serveimg.com site. If you try to drop a photo directly into you message - it won't work (it looks like it does to you, but everyone else gets a ? box instead of an image. Clear as mud?

Not only do you get to be a techno-whizz mechanic with this forum, but you get to be an IT-guru too!

So nice of you to join our rather passionate group.  Leave the Ninja for the young.  On your K you can comfortably ride all day in any kind of weather.  Can't do that on a sport bike.

The K bikes are pretty simple to work on and most if not all the potential problems you can come up with have been solved and documented.  Best of luck and welcome aboard

Any BMW motorcycle is better than any other bike out there. My K100RT lives out of doors all year 'round and experiences four fairly extreme seasons. When I remember to do so, I cover her against bad weather. She is no garage queen, but still looks damn good, with very little rust and controls that work as well as they did in 1985. Of course, the gear position indicator is only reliable in 4th and 5th gears and the speedo takes a nap now and then, but I can live quite well with that. When I push that button, she immediately comes to life, ready to rock 'n roll!

I was in Scotland in '07, spent 3 weeks travelling about.  After experiencing those roads to the west and north, I promised next time it has to be on a bike, just beautiful roads and scenery.

45mpg on my first longish ride on a K100RT - East coast of Oz. Would love to get it to 50 as I have some distance to do on it to get it back to Perth on the West Coast. Guess I will start with a check / change of the air-filter (unknown history).
