Afternoon all,

   My 1st gear is not happy at al with it's self.
My symptons are as follows.

Often takes three  goes to get it into 1st from a standstill.

Feels like the clutch is not engaged as i can feel the gears grinding through the gear lever.

When in very slow traffic and with hardly any power on it sometimes jumps out of 1st and into nuteral.

Very very clunky when going form 2nd to 1st.

The lever always sits and returns to the middle.

All the other gears are fine and very smooth.

So any ideas?

Also i am guessing that the box will have to come off.  I don't have the tools nor time to fix anything that i may find wrong inside it.

So is there anybody in the south of the UK who can do it for a sensible price?

If you simply don't have the time or freedom (meaning you need the bike to get around) to take the gearbox apart, you could likely easily find a complete unit on eBay or something.  My transmission just recently pooped out, 2nd gear would jump in and out, grind, sounded terrible at idle, etc.  I don't currently have the time to do a big job like that, so I found a complete unit with 30k miles on it for $150 USD on eBay.  Took maybe a few hours to swap it in after it showed up and I was good to go.  I use my k100 as my daily commuter, especially for freeway traveling, so I needed it asap.

If you go this route, most of the gearboxes are the same throughout all the models.  They change slightly for the 16v bikes, so just make sure you get the right one for your bike.

But hey, now I've got an extra engine with no compression on one cylinder sitting around, and an extra transmission with a bum 2nd gear sitting around.  Maybe when I retire in 40 years I can fix em up and build myself another bike!
