Have just finnished fitting aditional gauges (temp & oil pressure),

temp gauge sender fitted perfectly in to water pump drain plug,
to fit the oil pressure line I made an adaptor to fit the oil gallery grub screw in the front of the head, this runs along side of the wiring to the original oil sensor, up to behind the radiator where the new gauge sensor is attached to the lower fairing bracket. in this possition the pressure is read after the filter so if any problems occur in the filter it is shown on the gauge.

While there's nothing wrong with a bit of additional information on what's going on down there in the threshing machine between our legs I wonder if that oil line might not be tad vulnerable to road debris. Nice gauge set-up though. I've been pondering adding a VDO voltmetre like my Airheads have but then I thought about how reliable that alternator is compared to the weakling charging system on an old boxer and with this new-fangled battery and all...

Still, I might do it.

I like the temp gauge. Been thinking about one. Good to know you can use the drain plug.

Bushy, I agree with TWB on the vulnerability of the oil pressure line, great job on the gauges though. I suggest you go to BJR in Ulverstone and get a miniature SMC 90 degree fitting for the take-off connection, then run with hi pressure nylon line. Don't want to affect the reliability of the mighty K due to work hardening a copper tube. I hope Rob Mc has washed the RT at least once since becomming the new owner, she's not used to crud ! thanks for the feedback guys,

I'll take on board what you have said, thanks Dennis good to have a local onboard for advice.

Your old RT is in good hands, Rob keeps it soooo clean.

Followed your advice,
I made a guard to cover oil lines.
Its made from 1.6mm stainless, with 8mm spacers that fit the depressions where the orriginal machine screws were located.
I might paint it later but will wait and see if it oxidises a bit to match timing chain cover.
Looks ok follows contour of engine.

see pic.Wink

can't post pic as host server down will try later.

I was forced to think deeply about this when a friend wrote off his engine on his car because the oil pressure line parted and I then converted our car over to an electrical guage with a sender on the engine and a wire to the meter on the dash. That way if the wire breaks I just get the unit give an impossible reading.

I understand what you are saying, but putting an electrical sender down there would be more prone to damage than a line.

The line terminates at an electrical sender located at the rear right of the radiator, no all the way to th gauge. all the line is now protected.

I have visions of my brothers modified triumph herald being written off by fire when he dropped his fag end, and the carpet was soaked in oil from a leak at the oil gauge! Ouch

Copper line failed today as Dennis said it possibly would , bike had done 12000 km since install, noticed leak before it became a problem, close to home, no real dramas but will remove and reinstall grub screw for now.

Possibly go down the trail suggested by Dennis, high pressure nylon with 90  deg fitting and heat shield. Will post if i decide to do this,

But before then take Dennis's advice ....Don't use copper tubing..... I was lucky.

It was good to have the oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on things since I didn't know the condition of my engine, the gauge read a constant 75 psi 2000rpm and higher so I think I'll just stick to the warning light in the instrument cluster. All OK no damage done just a bit of a clean and back on the road.

regards Bushy

Have to agree on the pipe vs wire issue , destroyed a motor due to a high pressure nylon hose feed pipe for a gauge failing years ago . no oil pressure gauge is better than the risk of that happening and these things always happen in the middle of nowhere fully loaded on a long trip  .I work on the reducing potential problems on me touring rig cause I want it as reliable as possible    cheers AB

If you do have to use tubing use steel like the brake lines and every bolt or nut it goes past fasten it down  and then only take it to a place wher you can attach an electric sender so it isn't vunerable as it would be at the pump.

Using copper is OK is you put a coil in it, like they used to with old brit bike petrol and oil lines. The coil acts like a spring and absorbs the vibes that would otherwise work harden the copper.
