ummmmm,

What do you do if you didnt pay attention to which shim goes where in the cover of the gearbox?  Embarassed

Yer gonna have to start from scratch and set up the clearances and backlash.
Make sure the pinion bearings don't have any axial play.

seem to remember there was an amount of preload on the gearbox cover
but I have a Haynes manual or the bmw one ....available in the downloads Floyd

might be worth downloading it

??
