i am working on cleaning up my gauge cluster and I have 2 sets of gauges.  One of the tachs has a bad gear indicator window and the other is good.  My problem is the good window is in a tach from a newer set of gauges and there are only 3 pins to run it while the older one has 4 pins.  Can I still use the newer tack in the older gauges?  if not can I modify the older gauges?

The tachs from 2V and 4V bikes are different.  2V tachs use a signal directly from a coil while the 4V tachs get a signal from the Motronic.

You can swap the gear indicator PCB though:

The tacho from the new cluster can be swapped with the old one,
if it have been the other way around some have been needed as the new
one is a 9 screw model.

About the 3 & 4 pins.......this has nothing to do with the tacho, it's the pcb
for the thermistor type fuel low level warning sender.
The new one have a delay function and using only the 7 liter lamp.

If you only want to swap the tacho, remove the 3 brass screws.

Bah! You're right as usual.  I just remembered that it came from the Motronic but in looking at the wiring diagram Pin 19 on the Motronic has two green wires, one to the tach and one to the coil so it does get its signal from the coil.

Wow I just had an interesting thought. Duck and Inge square off to answer esoteric K-bike questions. A Jeopardy style quiz show. ("I'd like K-Bike wiring diagrams for $100 dollars, Alex!"). Seriously, you guys both rock. Any question asked gets a concise, clear answer, usually with pictures. A huge help, especially the pictures, to a newbie like me

Ok so if I am understanding you correctly, it does not matter the number of pins that go to the tach. It will function properly which ever one I choose to use? I already pulled the gear indicator from new one and put it in old one. So if the info comes from the coil do these bikes develop spark problems if/when tach starts to go bad? Like 80's era yamahas do? T

I am horrible at wire diagrams. I always have my father help with them. Hes an electronics engineer. I didn't get the genes

In the picture you see the connections for the tacho, which should be identical on both.

Haven't heard of any old K which got problem with the ignition caused by a
shorted tacho.....but not impossible.

The tach's are different. One has 4 pins and the other has 3. Thats why I was confused
