Hi,

I'm considering upgrading my center stand to the later style from the early style. My bike was produced in March 1985.

I was looking at the Motobins website and they indicate the upgraded center stand only fits '86 on models. What's the difference between the two versions of the center stand mounting points?

I've got the center stand with the curved feet which are prone to suddenly fail. I like the newer straight leg design, because I don't think it's as prone to fail like the early version.

If the new style center stand wouldn't fit my center stand/side stand mounting bracket, can I upgrade the bracket to the newer style bracket for my calendar date production K-bike?

Thanks for the help.

Regards

PS

Motobins also lists a new center stand mounting bracket that they indicate takes the later model center stand. I checked RealOEM.com for my VIN and the parts list indicates I already have the center stand that takes the later model center stand.

Based on what I can determine from comparing part numbers, the '86 on center stand will fit an 03/85 production K100.

It might be an exhaust/peg plate clearance issue as those are different on the 1985 and earlier bikes.

I upgraded to the newer style exhaust/foot peg mounting plates back in '87. My K100 now requires the newer style exhaust mount. I've got a Luftmeister exhaust on it now. I've got a new Staintune that I'm going to install when I start my restoration.

I fitted an 1100 stand on my '84 K100RT without issues, but did fit the whole arrangement (plate/centre stand/side stand). Also fitted the spacers to raise the bike a bit.

My understanding is that you have to go for the complete arrangement as ReneZ did.

Motobins parts for the K100:

1. Improved K centre stand. Standard for all 16v K's. Fits all K's '86 on.  (91537 Spacers & 91570 Circlips Required) Motobins Part No. 91509, BMW Part No. 46 52 2 311 490 (This is the straight leg centre stand)

2. BMW Centre Stand Upgrade Kit For all K's 1986 on - Contains all parts required. Motobins Part No. 91509K (This is the straight leg centre stand)

3. Support Plate all K (Later type, takes later centre stand 91508) Motobins Part No. 91590, BMW Part No. 46 52 2 311 150

RealOEM.com part numbers for USA Model K100RS - 03/85 production date:

Support Plate - BMW Part No. 46 52 2 311 150

I don't see where the new style centre stand won't fit a '85 K100RS with '86 on foot peg/exhaust mount plates. Both items 1 and 2 above should fit, because I've got the correct support plate. Unless there is a clearance problem with the early style foot peg/exhaust mount plates, the newer design centre stand should fit all K100's.

I also checked the support plate part number for a USA model K100RS with an 04/84 production date and the support plate part number is the same as the 03/85 production date model indicated above.

There appears to be a typo on the MotoBins K Series Centre Stands webpage. Item number three's MotoBins part number for the applicable centre stand is off by one digit from the MotoBins centre stand part number in item one above; 91509 vs 91508.

Yes, I upgraded to the K1100 style center stand just recently. Of this style there are two kinds, one with the electrical switch and the other without. Obviously go with the latter, which is a direct replacement.

The only hitch is the K1100 style comes with automatic side stand retract springs. The auto retract can be a problem when moving the bike around the garage because it retracts without any input as soon as the bike is lifted on that side. If one is not ready for it, such as being on the wrong side of the bike when it happens, it can make life difficult (say no more).

I reconnected the clutch interlock on my '85 to the K1100 kickstand, only their are enough minor differences to make it harder to pull the side stand up using the clutch. That is, it's not as smooth a mechanism as before. However, IMHO never use the clutch to withdraw the side stand because that stretches the cable. What I do instead is just retract the stand with my foot whenever I feel stiffness in the clutch mechanism (saves on clutch cables).

Hope that helps.

BTB, I have some pics of the upgrade if you want them. Just pop a request to my mail box.

The switch isn't part of the center stand assembly.  It's a separate part in between the main bracket and the trans.

The auto retract "feature" is a function of the shackle to which the springs are attached.  There are two spring shackle profiles -- one that locks the side stand in a deployed position and another that implements the auto retract.  Read this thread to learn more.

MotoBins edited their website in response to my inquiry. I suspect the issue with the centre stand is related to clearance with the change of foot peg plates. The foot peg plates change also affected the muffler attachment points.

Yes, I should add that I upgraded the foot plates too because the old muffler attachments were creating too much vibration. Still, its news to me that the K1100 center stand requires a foot plate upgrade too.  Surprised
