The relays route the power to the headlight away from the headlight switch which once the relays are fitted only passes the current to activate the relay instead to light the bulb. Given the nature of the K wiring this in itself seems to improve the lighting a little and bring more power to the bulb because there is less resistance. More power is more heat which in theory can cause the bulb plug to overheat and melt a little, especially as it will be old and the connections may not be absolutely perfect..
The ceramic plug also allows fitting higher wattage or higher output bulbs without risk of overheating the plug. They are or should be very cheap, standard H4 bulb connection.
