Part 14 is missing from my tank. I remember it from the last Kbike as just a piece of rubber. Does it serve any other purpose other than a tank guard? Do I need it?

Looking at the fiche, the part number isn't listed under K1100LT anymore. My K1100LT project doen't have it either.

It is still listed for some authorities bikes and the thicker pad (item 15) is still listed for some other models.

It was to protect the tank from scuffing by the seat's leading edge.

I think that I'm right in saying that the seat design changed with the 1100 models resulting in it being slightly re-positioned. That didn't apply to the authorities single-seat versions.

Something was there once mike, I sanded off a pile of, rubbery glue? before I 2pack primed it. I have a new seat and rear cowl for this bike that I got off ghosty. The bike came with a pre 85 seat and an aftermarket fiberglass cowl. I might just slip down to Clark Rubber and get a bit to fit.

K11's using 2 x part 13, part 14 was used on the K100's.


Part 13 is of a much softer than the rubber plate. I'll guess the idea was to prevent vibrations entering the seat....used together with the rubber laminated hinges.

Hey Robin, my ex-police bike also had the remains of some rubber pad on the back of the tank which I removed for painting and rather than replace it I put a piece of rubber on the nose of the dual seat that I fitted to hopefully do the same thing. Still on there after 16 years (looking at it now I was a bit rough with the trimming of the rubber).

Robin , the 1100 on loan to me recently had rub marks deep into the tank from lack of rubber . 
the seat had worn itself into the tank. I'd be inclined to fix a protector to the tank .
Gaz have you noticed any wear from having the rubber stuck to the seat, as opposed to the tank.

Ed, Robin, painted in 1997 around 100,000km ago. I might have got lucky with the seat positioning. With some careful tinkering I would think that its possible to adjust the seat position very slightly forward & aft which may be enough to ever so slightly clear the back of the tank.

The K1100s don't usually have that big rubber pad but 2 small pieces of rubber about 1 inch in diameter and are glued on to the tank about 60mm from the base.

Cheers guys, as Mike mentioned, the fiche for the K100LT shows part 15 being used for official vehicles so I guess that's what was there. As Gaz has done, attaching something to the seat instead of the tank seems to be the way to go. If I ever get time to paint this stuff I'll invent something
