quote from mal on fb
So as a BMW rally virgin I'd heard great story's of the Karuah rally from some well connected BMW riders, well an old cx 500 buddy of mine who had been coming to this rally for years.
So I phoned up an old mate of mine rob, who has owned several beemers over the years and we decided to do the rally, him on his rs 1200 and me on my k100lt.
I'd been to many cx 500 rally's and vintage jap rally's so I was interested to see the type of rider who is associated with this type of make of bikes.
More on that a bit later.
We headed off around 930 from robs place at Saratoga on the central coast and within 5 minutes the first of several interesting things to go wrong started, rob nearly lost his whole camping setup off he back of his rs around green point.I raised my eye brows ...I should have kept very quiet.
So we head off and decided to go trough to dungog in one hit ,great to get off the pacific killing machine and onto some great country roads where the old k bike showed me why I had purchased her, great Corning bike plenty of herbs and really comfortable ,except for the wind buffering the top of my head...easy fix.
We had a pleasant lunch in town, heaps of bikes around.
Rob says ,"now the beer situation malcolm",under control mate, we just go to camp setup and come back in a pick up some beers.
I did not read the instructions very well on the location of camp katihar did I?
35 minutes later, I'm not going to get beers mate! you can have the red and bourbon all to yourself. Every old football injury came to light on that dirt road and on a k bike it's not real pleasant but this was a good year I hear?
So after setting up ,much banter from rob, off we go again into town. He told everyone within ear shot what a knob I had been, tour leader he called me,,, pressure.
Pleasant beer at the pub, buy our supplies with ice,all good.
Riding along I loose rob...wtf where is he now!another BMW rider pulls over and tells me it's back there? What's back there, your pannier!!!!!!!, it's decided to part ways with my bike nearly taking rob out in the process.
I go back to find Dicko (I never call him rob), in the long grass pulling my pannier out......hardly a scratch.
So off we go again ..stuff knows how it came off........?
We get back to camp...lovely cold beers...yeah baby....I crack the pannier to find 12 beers swilling around in there own juices...wtf.
7 beers ok ,5 dead..there mine apparently. Dickso decides he can sell me one at mates rates, only joking here, I gave him my credit card details.
It's getting pretty bizarre by now, off for a swim,,,nice,my one beer in the lovely flowing creek ...great,dinners is up ,great looking forward to a nice steak sambo......none left.....fk,sausage sambo it's is with a bag of nuts to follow.
A walk around the camp saw a heap of late comers and our nice honey moon suite turned into pat pong back packers.
Got to meet john visser and his lovely wife, talk to a few of the owners but most were set in for the night.caught up with my old cx mate good to see him keeping up the cx standard of the wobberly boot.
Raffles ...never win nufing anyway, banter and sit down to our bourbon and a nice bottle of red. I've known Dickso for near on 25 years in our association with terrigal afl football club, been on one maybe two rides with him,but it was great spend some quality time with a quality person... He is one of the good guys as long as he has cold beer apparently.
The lads around us were well pissed by 1000 but friendly as and it was great to see all us bikes have one common thing in common, bikes.
330 am saw a Development of tv ringside taking place around my tent...stuff knows what was gong on.
I got up around 630 and wondered off towards he creek with dicko for an early wake up swim.
I got thinking, my old k bike does not get much over 200 km per tank and I was already up over 200 ...mmmmmm,red light had only just come on...tank lid off showed fk all petrol ......good god.
Luckily John visser is such a great guy and he gave me a few litre so of the golden liquid.....phew.
Packed up as rob has to go home to do his hair or something, rode in to town for a great feed then back to the central coast for a late lunch
Thanks for the great night to everyone ,maybe next time I will ride the old cx.....the k bike is handles it ok but it's a big unit for a dirt road, gem old footy bones of mine are just not the same these days.
Far cairn rally is on the list now but I think you might see us at a few of the central coast get togethers.
