It´s winter time, a good time to be nice to our loved ones. Starting on my K75 has always been weak and inadequate. So, I decided to beef up the electrics and put in new cables, 8mm in diameter (with insulation), from minus on battery to ground, from plus on battery to starter relay and from starter relay to starter. I must say that the results are great. When I hit the starter button now, I get a powerful and healthy start, and the motor jumps to life. Here is how I did it.
1. First, I took out fuse holder, the starter relay and the flasher relay to make room.
2. It´s important to use good materials and plan ahead. This rubber grommet fits into 16mm hole and the inside diameter is close to 10mm. It fits nicely around the 8mm cable when it´s in. Please ignore the nail manicure...;-)
3. I drilled two 16mm holes in the bottom of the relay box as shown on the photos.
4. It is very important to measure the lengths of the cables carefully in advance, install all shoes and check if they fit. Some filing and adjusting may be necessary. All important IMO is to solder the shoes on and preshape the cables to make installation easier and so that the flasher relay will fit in nicely.
5. This picture shows the cables and the starter relay installed in the relay box.
6. Cables ready to connect to battery.
7. Ground connection to gearbox.
8. Flasher relay back in.
9. Finished, start up and ride away. ;-)
