Hello all;

I was just given an '85 KI00 with an EML sidecar.   Quite a unique rig.  The elderly English gentleman had cut the car in half, front to back and added 4" in width. Then he built a hardtop, windshield and door with somewhat of a T-top which is removeable!  


It's not been run for about 4 or 5 years, so I've bled the brakes, changed oil, got the fuel pump working, and it fired right up.
However my first ride was interrupted by a ride home on a trailer.   Fuel pump quit again, and now no spark.  

I"m looking forward to being a member, and hope that I can contribute & learn too!

You got a nice one there, bike front end all nicely set up by the look of it and in great nick.

Don't worry too much on the fuel pump, its a well known thing after a few years off road and there is plenty on the site here to sort you out. Parts easily available too, some you may source locally and some from the UK.

I am on my second K100. First one was a 1992 LT, after 3 years got hit from behind and all the plastics wrecked, right hand engine cover broken so economically not worth fixing. So now a 1984 K100RT. Decided to stay with them because you learn so much about them and little modifications can make maintenance very easy. Despite the complexity if you know enough about it there is a lot you can do at the roadside through knowing what to do and having the odd spare part. Very reliable and they seem to go forever.

This a is a great site, any technical problems there is always someone will help.

Thanks for the welcome!   There certainly is a wealth of info on this site~I spent about 5 hours on here last night reading up!  
What a great site!!!!   

Current problems I'm trying to sort:

Alternator is not charging, so I'm in process of removing it to take to the rebuilders tomorrow to have it tested.  I suspect the regulator as there is not much to go wrong other than that.   


The fuel pump did not work at first, but managed to get it working long enough to go for a short ride.  I temporarily have the fuel pump working now, though I question how long it will keep going.  It was new 4 years ago, but has been idle since. 
The fuel strainer had several bits inside and after cleaning it and hooking the pump to a battery, it sputtered to life with an eruption of fuel and has been working since.

The big thing is that there is suddenly no spark at the plugs.  When you first hit the starter button it will spark 2-3 times very weak, then quits.
I rode it about one mile and it ran fine until the fuel pump quit again....then no spark, after cleaning the pump and getting it working for the second time. I'm not really sure where to begin with the spark issue......  I'm going to check the connections on the Temp Sensor, and test it first.  Then do a test on the Hall sensors.   Coils are new orange tip ones.   If anyone has any ideas on what might possibly be causing the spark issue I'm sure open to some advice.  I've cleaned the connections on the F.I. brain under the tool tray, and plan today to clean all the grounds under the tank and on the left side of the transmission, and the contacts on the Ignition control module.  
I'm new to K-bikes, but have ridden a R1100 RSL for several years now.  I've had to rebuild the Hall Sensors in the R1100 about a year after purchase, so that is within my skillset.  

I've never ridden a side hack before, and I'm excited to get this running!   The 'ol girl has 271,000 miles on it, and the head was redone not many miles ago.  The previous owner said he has run synthetic oil, changes it each 5,000 miles and that it uses no oil inbetween changes.  The one stipulation to him giving me the rig was that I must put enough miles on it to get the 300,000 mile award badge from BMW.  He has the 200,000 mile badge proudly displayed on the left side cover.  


It's great to be here, and the knowledge base obviously on display has renewed my confidence on the repairs needed.

best advice I can give  is look for some "deoxit "

its a contact cleaner treatment ...usually used in electric musical instruments audio plugs etc (pro music shops commonly stock this product )

you will find it mentioned throughout the forum

there is another ecu under the tank (electronic ignition )  do the connections on it as well

the hall sensors terminate in a multi pin connection as they go into the loom under the tank ....cleanup all that you can see in there I recon .


 the connectors to the coils are kinda exposed down low on the left hand side ....might be worth investigating .....but all in all it just might be the fact that you have poor charging and battery state ?   
warning ....the starter relay "welding" in the on state can be an issue with low battery grunt .

Welcome to the forum.
If the nylon strainer on the bottom of the pump has been letting debris through, change the inline fuel filter that lives in the tank. I had a similar problem and it completely blocked.
If the pump works at all, they generally continue to do so unless the bike is parked up for long periods.

Thanks for the advice guys.  Good thought to change the filter, or at least have one handy!  It's good to know that the pump may survive.

Deoxit seems to be non existent locally anymore.  I found lots of different types of "electrical contact cleaner" but it doesn't sound like that's 
really what we are after, upon reading the cans.   Looks like an interweb search is in order!  

I found the wiring is really a mess, many splices over the years.  The cooling fan was very hard to turn, but seemed to free up somewhat after turning it back and forth.   After freeing it up, No luck hooking 12v. to it-probably toast. it wasn't necessary!  
Having the sidecar on there sure makes it a pain to work on!

I was able to find DeoxIT yesterday, so the cleaning begins....

Found time to take the alternator by the repair shop yesterday, and it was pronounced to be alive and charging (good news for the pocketbook). So I'm now pondering why the battery is not charging.  It must have something to do with the "exciter" wire not being energized when the bike is running. (more research)


I intend to put the alternator back tonight after work, and put the battery back in, so I can then begin to diagnose why I'm suddenly not getting spark.

I just realized that this is in the introductory section.  Possibly it should be moved to somewhere different.
