Older gentlemen? - I resemble that remark! (actually I don't, being one of the younger (cough, cough) gentlemen of the group, at 47).

Nice work on the routes.  I suppose it depends on the weather, but either route sound  good to me.  I will have to see how stiff I feel on Saturday morning after the drive up from Cork on Friday.

Comberjohn has made two route suggestions.

Option 1 is for the longer ride to include Joey Dunlop's pub and also Bushmills Distillery, and, depending on time, Torr Head Drive. I suspect this is the preferred option.

Hillsborough, The Square, Chimes is where we met last time and had an excellent breakfast. Its a nice warm up run from Kilkeel which may just take us past Clough where we could link up with Comberjohn at the petrol station. That way none of us gets lost. So how about a 9.15am breakfast?

Option 2 was for about 100 miles for the 'older gentlemen'. Since a K makes one feel younger do I assume there are no 'older gentlemen' among us? However that shorter route is in fact a really lovely one too so don't be put off. For simplicity it might be as well to keep the same breakfast arrangement and see how we go over breakfast.

Olaf.

It looks like we will be at least 4 in number if not more for the evening. We got back last year about 7pm after a perfect day. However not tied to anything so....but darkness will start to descend around 8.15pm so no scenic rides after that.

I think Comberjohn might join us on Friday evening as its a good excuse to take the K for a run....so we might manage some supper or whatever suits us. Hopefully we will make it up early enough.

Sounding better all the time Olaf,
and I guess you're right as it's getting darker much earlier now.
I know after the run up and back from the NW200 I was fairly wrecked.
So will be glad to get the head down and look forward to a handy run home on Sun.
you can take Honda Mick and Honda Ferg off that list now or at least move em to the apologies section.

will be in touch before the weekend
adios

If everyone is OK I think we'll call it 9.15 at Cafe Deelite(formally Cafe Chimes) in the Square at Hillsborough.
As we have a few miles to cover we will need to get away sharpish after we all meet up. And, of course, the weather will be perfect. Irish Eccentrics September 2013 North? - Page 2 Icon_lol
I'll text you about coming down to Kilkeel nearer Friday, Olaf.

I was going over what bits and bobs to pack and I came across this site

http://micapeak.com/checklists/mclist.html

Now obviously some of the stuff for deffo doesn't apply and as it originates ''across the pond'' some brand names are different but its a easy way to check off what you ''dont'' want to pack while allowing things to be added.

Anyway as an apparent ''elder member'' ahem.....I found it useful ;-)

Looking forward to the meetup at ''Cafe Deelite'', co-ords loaded.

Roll on SAt

This looks likes it's all settled.

9.15am Saturday Café Deelite [previously Café Chimes] at the Square in Hillsborough. Excellent parking outside too.

Thanks Comberjohn and all looking forward to the day.

Weather is on www.met.ie for anyone who wants to keep an eye out. As is usual it looks clear for Saturday.....and some of Sunday too.

Hopefully see you Friday night John....

Olaf.

I was up in Bushmills a few weeks ago, and as luck would have it, I had a 50th birthday the following week.  As my 50yo mate likes Bushmills (as do I), I got him one of the 12 year old bottles that you can get with customised labels. £36 for the bottle, or £39 with customised label. This 12 YO is oly available in the distillery.

He has opened it and said it is as smooth as a babys arse.  So he has given me some money to buy another bottle when we are up there.  I'll probably get one for myself as well.

We must sort a travel schedule with Cluain Si and friend and also DeRodster and possibly Tom Foley.

I am ok for a start anytime Friday so will work around you.

Cluain Si and friend will meet us at Cashel as before. 1st Stop Cashel about 1 hour from Cork Dunkettle. Lunch is an option here depending on times.

Tom Foley: We could pick you up around Naas [1 hour from Cashel] if you come on M9 or earlier if you come cross country towards Urlingford or Kildare in which case maybe better to do just coffee at Cashel and [excellent] lunch at Monasterevin J14 Mayfield services and refuel.

We could pick up DeRodster at services after M1 toll? [about 3/4 hour from Naas]

Straight run to Kilkeel [about 1 1/4 hours] after M1 toll but a stop for refuel at border.

I put travel times in to plan it out. We should aim to be in Kilkeel not too late as in well before dark to enjoy the sunset and avoid getting lost.......

If we aim for Kilkeel for no later than 7pm maybe aim to leave Cork Dunkettle 1.30pm latest to allow time for a lunch stop and coffee and a refuel at the border.

Bjorn, not forgetting you. Its a straight run from Newry and I can text you directions or call you or one of us can go to meet you.

Bon voyage.....

Olaf,
nice work,

So....

I finish work at 12:30, so if we say 1 - 1:30 in Dunkettle.
That means

1:00 - 1:30 Dunkettle  Olaf and Fintan
arrive 2:00 - 2:30 Cashel - for Coffee (say 1/2 an hour) Olaf, Fintan, and Cluain Si & friend
Arrive 3:30 - 4:00 Naas - for Lunch (say 3/4 an hour) Olaf, Fintan, Cluan Si, Friend, and Tom
Arrive 5:00 - 5:30 M1 Toll - Olaf, Fintan, Cluan Si, Friend, and Tom meet DeRodster (much hootin', hollerin', and throwing up of sweaty nightcaps).
Hit road for Kilkeel
Arrive 7:00 - 7:30 Arrive in Kilkeel

I'd say, with inevitable delays, we'ed be better striking off as early as possible from Dunkettle, to get around the M50 before rush hour.

How does that sound to everybody?

Does that mean I don't have to bring my sweaty nightcap?

So, that doesn't alter the timing, just that we don't stop at the M1 toll.

Means you save time packing the sweaty nightcap. I packed in a boxed set of Steptoe and Son episodes in case you miss it.

All jokes aside we should head off at whatever time works for you, first stop Cashel for Cluain Si and his friend.

1:00 is good for me, at the Dunkettle Roundabout. If this timing suits everyone else, then we have got

1:00 Dunkettle  Olaf and Fintan
Arrive 2:00 Cashel - for Coffee (say 1/2 an hour) Olaf, Fintan, and Cluain Si & friend
Arrive 3:30 Naas - for Lunch (say 3/4 an hour) Olaf, Fintan, Cluan Si, Friend, and Tom
Hit road for Kilkeel, via M50, M1
Arrive 7:00  in Kilkeel

If these times suit everyone else, will we call it good?

As to the aforementioned Steptoe and Son dvds, one of my favourite lines is where the old man makes beans for dinner to which the son replies 'not baked beans again Dad, you know they give me funny insides'. I like baked beans and they give me funny insides......blazing saddles, here we come. Well, on a different note, I just spent the last three hours replacing the pump in the septic tank. It had tripped the RCD at 4:30 this morning.  I know this because the bedside clock went out and I had to get up to find the cause.

The new pump is a bit bigger than the old pump, which required some judicious use of a hammer on the concrete to get it to fit.
The new pump has a different spigot to fit the outflow pipe. I couldn't  re-use the old spigot, because the connection from it to the old pump was a different size as well.

I love standardization, Mad Mad

Ah well, three hours later and I can sit on the throne and flush it with impunity. bounce

And I am reeeealllly looking forward to Kilkeel now !!!!

Mention is made of Mayfield Services at Junction 14 and arrive there about 3.30 for lunch and petrol at which stage we should be 4 bikes.

If you could make a lunch date that would be the icing on the cake and we would love to see you. We seem to have more or less settled on that timescale so I will keep you posted.

This sounds excellent.

Fintan and myself are meeting 1pm at Dunkettle.

That will put us at Cashel before 2pm, probably about 1.50pm. A few minutes for tea/coffee say leave about 2.15. 98km motorway from there to you, speed limit 120kph.....We should be at the services for lunch not much after 3pm......

We leave around 4-4.15pm we should be ok for rest of trip and just miss the peak M1 traffic.

We might have trouble finding a hovercraft but you will see 2K100s plus a K1200 plus a VFR travelling together.

Olaf.

Indeed we will have to look into that Olaf, wouldn't do at all.

Wx forecast for tomorrow & Sun
Well done to Comberjohn for arranging what looks like a fine sunny day Sat...
from "www.Met.ie" -  "Saturday night will begin dry and clear but rain will sweep across the country from the west overnight and southwest winds will strengthen. Rain will continue through Sunday morning and into the afternoon, turning heavy at times, especially in northern areas. Later in the afternoon, the rain will clear to showers from the northwest. Southwest winds will be very blustery with the rain before veering west to northwest as the rain clears. Strong, west to northwest winds will persist on Sunday night, with gales in places, although showers will become largely confined to northern and western counties. "

So a soggy ride home on Sun looks possible ;-(

On the plus side panniers will be filled with good grog.

Am all packed and ready to go. Fueled up, tires checked + oil, water and brake fluid.

Safe driving to you all and looking forward to meeting in the morning at Hillsborough.

You weren't joking about the weather Shocked

From acuweather.com

The strongest storm to blast the United Kingdom and Ireland since the spring threatens to whip up damaging winds on Sunday through Monday.
The storm is capable of unleashing wind gusts of 80 to 110 kph (50 to 70 mph) from northwestern Ireland to Scotland.
Northern and western coastal locations will be most susceptible to winds on the higher end of that range.
Such winds could lead to widespread tree damage and power outages, as well as minor structural damage. Additional damage will result if the trees land on structures and cars.

I think I'll be leaving early on Sunday to get ahead of the storm if possible.  At least the wind will be from the rear (fnarr fnarr Razz ) so the mpg should be great.
