Any music players ?  Groupies ?

What kind do you play / listen ?

Favorite decade ?

Mine is 1965-1975

I mess around on Fender (Pearl) Precision Bass, some (little) guitar, flute (best), keyboard, violin (horrible).

Just curious.

I don't play any musical instruments, but have played the fool, idiot, clown and joke.

Favourite singer is Frank Zappa.
Favourite genre is metal

Metal from any decade is good

I mess around on the Fender (both front and rear) steer clear of the flute and after one very long session was seen tinkling on the ivories.

Any and all double entendre's intended

Curious (but not George)

Definitely NO rap since it is non music.

Good questions Beemer Wheeler.

We know a lot about our bikes, but next to nothing about their owners.

It seems that most of us are in our 50's and I would not be surprised to see a common pattern about our musical tastes.

I don't play any instrument, but my type of music is the one from the 70's:Black Sabath, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, The who, Deep Purple, Queen..... This is what I am listening when riding the bike.
Once in a while, I seat in my favorite chair, turn on the sound system (full blast) and the LCD projector and enjoy a nice video concert from the 70's.

Here is my man's cave. I still have my collection of records from when I was in my 20's.

Good times anyway we can.
Thanks heaven for Utube & such, so many great concerts.

Watched this one when Alvin Lee finally went home:

Leo Lyons on Fender Bass.  Great guy !

Had the privilege to share a couple of their joints (black "Afgan") with them on the lawn in front of the stage for 20 minutes at the Amougies Festival Belgium 1969, just before they start performing as the roadies shuffled gear.
Very simple no fuss dudes at that time.
Great human beings.

all the above ( with limited amount of songs ...i guess its a time and place thing ) and then some .

country is good .. john Williamson(aust)  ..jim Williams and so many more
so is western

but things like micheal Jackson ...disco stuff ..electronica ..in all sorts of forms... craftwork ...and then things like .. pink floyd ..joe cocker .. beetles ...stones ..abba ? ..grin

artists currently on the usb (in car) - phone playlist include.. armin van burren .. faithless ...chicane ...schiller..timbaland..acaa-dacaa ..and the list goes on and on
don't mind a bit of psytrance ..on open, long distance road trips ..drum and bass ...anything that's 120 bpm or better
but everybody has always told me im weird
i really don't care ..i love em all
nothing like a good melody and a good bit of musicianship yes even including non man made backing rhythm machines
its all too good, not to be enjoyed .
have been watching tv ...on the computer since the late ninetys ...(even if it was a vcr tuner output to capture card at that time )  once  you go there ( high quality ) you never want to go back to boring big pixel -fuzzy pictures  ...grin (old eyes and specs i guess )

Back in 2003 I did hanker after a bike but music came first. I don't play but acquired a Linn system to indulge a passion for music. My car in 1995 came with a rather excellent 8 speaker Clarion system that included a cd changer and I was hooked on having nice audio.

A mix of classical, anything. I have not gone compressed so n iPods iThis or iThat.

The cd collection is large and includes....

Regular:
Creedence Clearwater Revival.
The Who.
Zeppelin.
Stones
Don Maclean
Springsteen
Jackson Browne
Chieftains with RyCooder
Emmylou Harris on her own and with Dolores Keane, or Mark Knopfler and more.
Elton John.
ELO
Wings.
Nazareth.
Celine Dion
Paul Brady.
U2
Bobby Goldsboro
Cliffort T Ward
Boney M
Pink Floyd
Eagles
Status Quo
Wizard.
Surprise: No Beatles.
David Bowie.
The Doors.
T Rex
Biffy Clyro
Funeral For a Friend.
Sarah Maclachlan
Willie Nelson
Kristofferson.
Elvis Presley

Classical:
Gustav Mahler, over 200 recordings of his symphonies dating back to the 1920a. Obviously the early ones are not exactly good acoustic quality but nevertheless good to listen to. For an introduction listen to his 4th symphony.
For those who are wary but love a full bore session listen to his 8th and 2nd symphonies. My daughter is a classical musician and when she was studying music I got her tickets to one of these and told her it would make her hair stand up. She laughed but when she came home she said that it did do that.
Richard Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra, better known for the intro to 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Alpine Symphony...very descriptive.
Henryck Gorecki: over 10 recordings of it. Some will say depressing, it tells a story, his Third Symphony. Search out Naxos Zofia Kilanowicz, such a lovely voice. Haunting.
Leopold Mozart.
Orff. [who uses Old Spice?]
Neilsen.
Grieg: Peer Gynt, one for a ride through the mountain twisties...
Philip Hawes [contemporary].
Cantaloube:  Songs of  the Auvergne. If you have been to France you will appreciate this one.
Tallis.
Pachelbel
Albinoni
Bach Choral music.
Russian Orthodox music. A bit heavy for some but my Dad loved it.
Any amount of organ music- the bigger the better.
Piano trios.....now that's great
Rachmaninov.
Kachaturian.....Spartacus.

Any Mahler lovers out there?????

I better stop.....but lets have some more.

Right on C F, looks like we're gonna need a Biking Music section on this board where we can post links to our favs on Utube etc...
So we know where to "tune in" for an earful.
I don't listen to music on the Bike, engine sounds good enough, but rebuilding a bike or engine in the shack needs loud music.
Nice setup !
As for getting to know people :  Tell me what music you like, and I will tell you if I like you or not.
Birds of a same feather...

I ended up with a nice patio beside the house which has a L shape. I have a small store which keeps all the expensive bits. Its a good place to work on the bike on a nice day, windows open and lots of loud music needed too.

Tangerine Dream outside....

Impressive list man.

Yes I like Gustav Mahler, Bach, Wagner, Kar Orf, Albinoni (Adagio a must for foreplay), Vivaldi, Brahms, Beethoven, most all classical music, even if I'm too revved most of the time, and need some Rock & Roll.
Also some Avant-guarde experimental music:  Varese (heavy stuff), Boulez,  Pierre Henry (specially with Spooky Tooth: L' Apocalypse de Saint Jean), Subotnic, Mimaroglu, and many more.

I MUST  add to my 70's list Jethro Tull !!!
Golden Earing, Free, Pink Floyd (first 2 albums !!! + some ), Focus, CSNY, Neil Young, Chicago, Man, Nice, ELP, ELO, Quintescence, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Edgar Winter, Johny Rivers, Joe Cocker, Little Richard, Them, The Kinks, Man, Doors, CCR, Captain Beefheart, Blind Faith, Black Sabbath, Animals, Bad Company, Allman Brothers, ZZ top, Pretenders, Janis Joplin, The Who, Earth Wind and Fire (some, great dance music), Genesis, Coloseum, Ferre Grignard, Jacques Dutronc, Antoine (that's old), Rory Ghallager, Jeff Beck, Procol Harum, I'll stop here, for now.

Depeche Mode is my band. Pet Shop Boys comes second. Both have released they're best albums many years ago. Violator remains the album I stand by. Then there is Queen, Rammstein, New Order, Nizzer Ebb and some finnish bands / artist like Chisu, CMX, Scandinavian Music Group, Ultra Bra, Ismo Alanko, Nightwish etc.

I dont play any instrument (unless guitar heros plastic guitar is counted), I do sing, but no one likes to listen.

Anything. With the exceptions being country and western...and rap, especially Australian rap. Sleep

Love house/chill/techno music.

Great thread as it's interesting to see (hear) what music others listen to.

Beemer Wheeler, thanks for listening. Very Happy

OK, if we're going to be serious about it.......

As well as the above mentioned, there's The Pink Floyd, Neil Young and early Bob Dylan.
Classical:
Brahms, Vivaldi, Bach, Chopin. Basically anything with strings...along the way.,
80's Oz alternative rock:
The Lime Spiders, Vanilla Chainsaws, Lubricated Goat, Sunnyboys, Candy Harlots, Spy vSpy, The Trilobytes, The Wet Taxis. ...etc etc etc. All the bands you could see at The Hopetoun and other inner city venues.

 Lubricated Goat,

Ok Sean you just lost me with serious and Lubricated Goat.

I watched live as they sang naked on TV and noone would believe me until it showed up on the news.
Trouble is now if you search for Lubricated Goat you get all kinds of sites you never had any intention of visiting.

If anyone wants to watch, this was live on Australian tv. It is naked men so that cant be classed as pron right?
And I don't remember the censorship

When you're rolling across the Hay Plain, the endless Barkly or the straight-as Nullie, there's nothin' like Aussie poet laureate Paul Kelly to talk you a tune. Though lately he's as good crossing Death Valley or a Kansas wheat field.

Direct link when the video is disabled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf51r4kWgLI

My dear departed father was a musician (classically trained on the piano), and enjoyed a career as a high school/university music teacher, and my three brothers, older and younger, all play various instruments, one of them's recorded with some 'names' in the early Seattle Grunge era. As a teenager I tried piano, guitar and drums, but nothing resonated from my fingers. When hitchhiking solo for a year as a nineteen year old I carried along my G note harmonica and at night under bridges rattled off something sounding soulful. I play a spanner better, and so it is. But didn't we grow up with all sorts of music, and when listening to the radio, the DJ had better not talk over the most important part of why we're listening. Or I'll switch the bastard off.

These dayz it's anything bar dissing, posturing rap or hip hop, breathy top forty or twang-so-you-know-it's-country pop. Just can't get my inner ear to conform to crassly commercial rhythms. Rock on.

Paul Kelly, Nothin' On My Mind:

A few years back, I went to see Paul Jones, (Manfred Mann and his own Blues Band), at a small venue in Cranleigh,
Surrey, just outside Guildford. About 200 or so in the hall. In the second half, he says, "A mate of mine lives locally, he just popped in, welcome, Eric..."

Mr Clapton.

He did practically the whole second half of the gig, and it cost us a tenner to get in. Brilliant!

Two days later, he was in the West Indies.

Lifetime guitar player here (I have over 30 of 'em).  I perform at least once a week with a customized Les Paul.  I play basically everything except country (icch).  My record collection (yes, vinyl records) contains as much classical as it does rock.  Major influences: Zepplin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Clapton.  Classical: late-Romantic era to early 20th Century, especially Russian.

My wife sings, and recently sang 1st Alto in the Chorale with the North State Symphony performing Beethoven's 9th Symphony.  It was awesome!

Best song for a twisty road?  Kashmir, by Led Zep.  Even better is the version of Kashmir by the band named Bond (it's on iTunes).

On a rainy day thinking about travelling, where can you go but into the garage to spin spanners, or flopp on the couch to watch the tele or slunked down into a comfy chair to read a good book or listening to your own record collection - no one else's home so it's up to ear bleeding, wall shaking levels.

Since I'm thinking about travelling, and certain music and travelling go hand in hand, my iPod is synced up with these guys, and for the next heat-seeking ride I take they'll be along with me. Red Barchetta is one of those excellent riding/driving songs!

Here's a taste of the Canadian power trio I've been listening to since I first heard them play live in concert back in 1975, when I had hair like Geddy! Neal, the drummer, rides Beemers, and is an accomplished author as well.

Love, love, love Rush. Also a proud canuck so this Canadian band is a favourite. If you even like Rush a bit, I also highly recommend the documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. Thanks TWB.

Give this a whirl.

White Lies 'There Goes Our Love Again'

Consummately written Brit pop: catchy as hell and suitably darkly versed.

I smiled at this one....try Tangerine Dream, Poland concert, its live and was recorded in sub zero temperatures. My collection is probably 50/50 classical too.

For your wife: Mahlers 4th symphony, recently [2009] recorded in Budapest by Ivan Fisher. Its a must have and even if she knows this one that particular recording is awesome. Find it on Amazon for her. I have had a lot of people comment on it. The soprano voices are lovely. I might have an old K, but my music plays on a collection of Linn Klouts so when I am working on the bike I have no incentive to be quick. A beer outside and some Russian profundi voices kind of rock my boat, and the house. The relevant fact is my neighbour is a quarter of a mile away.

I had a 6 year old nephew over a while back and he was looking at the collection. So I asked him what would he like to hear. You could have heard a feather drop when he said organ music. At 6. I said are you sure, he went yep. I thought he was thinking something different, as in harmonica, but anyway I gave him proper organ music. He spent an hour listening to old organ music, religious music etc and I never saw a guy so happy. It was lovely to see it.

Like many of us, over the years, tastes have changed.  So I keep adding more, my MP3 player has Cab Calloway, Sinatra, Sammy Davis jr as well as Deep Purple, the Beatles, Van morrison, the Eagles, America (still a fav) Daddy Cool, Devo, etc etc.  its a variety.

The last decade I started going to Folk/Roots Festivals so much of my collection is mostly way off mainstream these days.  In no particular order Luka Bloom, Harry Manx, Old Man Luedecke, Truckstop Honeymoon, Ange Takats, The Good Lovelies, George Kanikawa/Noriko Tadano, Dr Stovepipe, Bruce Mathiske, Eric bogle, CW Stoneking, Alistair Hulett, Bob Fox, Andy Irvine, Chris Duncan, Dougie Maclean, Richard Thompson, Eddie Reader, Genticorum,  all feature very heavily in what I listen to most of the time these days.  I'll listen to scottish fiddle or good Clawhammer Banjo all day long  Sad

The thing i like about the festivals is I always leave with a new favourite artist.  next weekend is the Blue Mountains festival just up the hill from my place.

Nice to see you put ye old Irish up there in front with Luka Bloom.....like Andy Irvine too. Have you heard of the McPeak Family?

America still on of my favourites, love Ventura Highway....

McPeak? no.  But they haven't come and played in front of me yet.

Speaking of Arlo Guthrie (from another poster).  About 5 years ago I was lucky to see him in a venue that seats only about 80 people, had the front table at the stage.  Then topped it off by having a drink with Arlo and some of my friends after the show before heading home.  He was staying there overnight and no rush to hit the bed yet.  It was a great night. He rides an Indian

I heard about an Indian somewhere there. You might need to clarify that its a motorcycle.........

I don't think the McPeak Family will be travelling, but some of their music is really good.

Some other good combinations....Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler; The Chieftains and Ry Cooder; Emmylou Harris and Dolores Keane; or have you come across The Transatlantic Sessions?
