I pulled my final drive off to check on the splines the other day and they were totally coated in a brown lube. It kind of looked like copper anti-seize. Thing is, the splines looked AMAZING, like brand new. I wish I had a picture, but I didn't think of it at the time. I'd love to have some of this stuff on hand, if anyone has any idea what it could have been.

It may be copper antisieze but it isn't any good for splines as it cant take the pressure on the driving face.
It well may be something else or have only been on there for a short while.
The antisieze is designed to squeeze out of the pressure faces of a bolt but fill the other spaces and stop corosion forming.
Get some good spline lube with 40 - 50% moly in it, that will look after the splines.

both lubes are the suggenstions from BMW

wave a look at ebay/google for that

pls don`t use copper paste

Haha, I know enough not to slop copper antiseize on my splines, its just what it looked like the PO put there. I'm going to hit all the splines with a proper paste soon.
