Hi,

If anyone is coming for holidays at the Dalmatian coast this summer, consider passing through Bosnia. There is a lot to see & enjoy - and I will be glad to meet fellow members for a ride & beer.

Well the summers are quite (but not unpleasantly) hot. And especially because OUR summer is at the same time when is YOUR winter down under (New Zealand, if I'm not mistaken?), it could be a fine escape.

For my own town (splendid combination of oriental Turkish, Austrian and modern architecture, best known because World War I begun here) and country, see:

My favourite pice of Adriatic coast is Makarska Riviera, approximately half way between towns Split (famous for remains of Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace) and Dubrovnik (old town in a beautiful fortress). Immediately behind Makarska is Mt.Biokovo, with a curvy road leading to its 1762 m high peak.

Some pics...

You should be on comission from the tourist board Nino!

Not this year I'm afraid but there is a company here called overlanders who ship bikes and gear return to somewhere in your part of the world for about €700 which saves the long ride down - you just catch a cheap flight to pick up your bike. I could be tempted in the near future. This year, if possible, scandanavia will be on the cards for me.

My brother is going to Split in September. He has an apartment rented for the month. He invited me over and an overland trip via London would work as my daughter is in London. I have ideas of going via Florence Rome Naples and a ferry across to Split. It looks a really nice route but depnds on a few things happening so no plans made yet.

Hi Tom,

No news yet......down to Aviva and they are not exactly consumer friendly. Hard to be looking at all this good weather but work has also suddenly turned busy so up the walls for next few weeks with bike thoughts on back burner.

There is another possbility to avoid long ride down - by using German railways "car trains" - DB Bahn Autozug. Their English web page:

https://www.dbautozug.de/autozug-en/destinations/;jsessionid=F92E58008B9D1D397025C9EEE5505407.ecm-ext-cae-slave1-berka

2013 summer online-catalogue:

http://media.dbautozug.de/katalog/Sommer2013/GB/

One can load his bike onto the train and use the sleeper car, avoiding long rides on the motorways.

There are ferries from Bari to Dubrovnik, and Ancona to Split or Zadar.
