Hello,

I am new here, and new to BMW K bikes.
I just picked up a 1989 K 100 today! Pretty excited to work on it, and it looks like you guys have some awesome info here.

It needs a little TLC. The Fairing was busted when a guy fell over on it doing 20 mph.
I took that off today, along with the head lamp.

It turns over, but won't yet start. He said he had a mechanic look at it, and was told it needs a fuel pump.
I'm excited to spend some time with this bike to get it running as good as possible.

This guy Mitch is a great motorcycle tech in Boise & a personal friend. He learned his trade from the best there ever was. He specializes in Ohlins suspension stuff but I think he provides general services.
I can guarantee he is trustworthy & honest.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome here. I looked at Mitch's
web page and didn't see an address for a shop, but a phone number.. I
will reach out to him via tele and see if I can't bend his ear some.
I also appreciate the link to the page - "so you just bought a K what now", it looks to be a great starting point for me.

I
need to figure out how to drain the gas (going to research that today,
thought I saw something on removing the tank), and I believe I need to
replace the fuel pump and filter.

You have excellent taste in both bikes and cars judging by that w123 in the backround! The fairing has seen better days but the mechanicals on the k bikes are so robust it takes a lot to kill them. Enjoy the bike.

Hello and welcome Vader, we had been watching that bike on CL and it looked like a nice project. It was a good price too as I remember.
So you'll get her running. And you can find parts on Ebay, and Ibjman has some misc stuff left over.
Keep us posted on your progress. This year is the 30 year anniversary of Kbikes, and the MOA NA rally is in Salem Oregon soon.

Rare to see a /8 now, especially a 200 diesel, quite rare, most of them here have rusted away to oblivion. Good thing is they run on vegetable oil too.....Its easier on them than high sulphur diesel.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advice, comments, etc.
All good info!

The car in the background is a 1973 Mercedes 220D. I picked it up from a guy out in the country, it had 67k original miles and had been garaged all of its life.
It's fun to get around in for sure.

I have to say, this forum is pretty amazing, and it seems there are some nice folks with some great insight here.
Looking forward to learning this bike inside and out.

Im a merc collector too X 2 W124s 300E and E280 24v, like the K they don't build em like that any more. I was given the 300E needed a new brain, $120 from a wrecker goes very well for 330 000km not even had a valve grind just guide seals . would love a diesel. Feel like making my own fuel sick of being ripped for the go juice.

Making your own juice?

280 24V is an unusual one, most of the 24V here are 300E 24v. A bit like the 560V8, US/Asian market stuff.

The 300D, 240D and a lot of the earlier 200D and 220D models as well as Peugeot/Citroen XUD diesel engines [not HDi, but pre HDi] use a Bosch fuel injection pump that will work with straight vegetable oil.

If you use old as in used oil it must be filtered and cleaned, but new can be used 'straight from the bottle', but best diluted with some diesel.

Common rail diesels require the vegetable oil to be modified but you can buy units for doing that at home, costs run to about €30 cent per litre.

It is quite rare to see one of those Mercs in such good order, definitely worth making into a show car with such a low mileage. Some of the mechanical components on the alter ones are interchangeable with early model W123 models that followed. God Mercs disappeared in the mid 90s, the W124 is the last of the good ones and like the K goes on forever. I fancy a W123 300D but they are scarce and good ones are expensive.
