Today I tightened my prop stand by turning a few thou off the steel bush to compensate for wear and on re-assembly this is how I fitted the springs without having a trip to A&E (accident & emergency).
Just fit a load of washers between the coils and the spring fits neatly over the pegs. Operating the stand then extends the spring and all the washers drop onto the floor. QED.

It's a ruse that does work, I've used it but these days I find a pair of needle-nosed mole-grips clamped on the spring hook is quicker. Hook the top of the spring in place then pull downwards on the mole-grips set the lower hook and released the grips.

Wish this was posted earlier. Replaced those springs last winter using 90deg angle needlenose plyers. Had to wrap the kickstand itself in a soft towel because my hand kept hitting it violently every time I missed the mark.

I inherited a pair of brake spring pliers from my Dad. He said "you might only use them once a year, but you'll be glad of them"

Never seen a spring plier before, really neat tool!

A caution about the pliers, Mike......it is possible that a "scratch" or score mark left on the spring hook area from a pair of pliers can cause a hardened spring to fracture off at that point

You can pick them up on fleaby for 5 to 7quid. But as my old man said you may only use them once a year so are they worth spending that much to save a few little blood-blisters and an ear full of foul language ?
