Well i thought i would remove the leaking rear brake cylinder so as to give it a clean up and rebuild.
Thats when things got carried away. I have had a new set of radiator hoses for a while now, so i thought i might do that too.
Well one thing lead to another and its just about to get the engine and box seperated from the frame for a bit of a spruce up. Going to paint the engine, box, swingarm and final drive.
Also making a new dash pad to house just the ignition switch and power outlet.
A few pics to start.

What can I say. I had my bike waiting for some mirrors and new tyres to get registration. Came here to the forums and today I dropped my frame off to get it blasted ready for painting

I know how you feel boys. I'm constantly balancing between really going at it and trying to keep it in riding condition. Just putting the fairings back on tonight and already planning stripping the back end for a rear frame paint, clutch spline lube and g/box seal. Still .....I'm not doing a resto, oh no, that would be too time consuming and expensiveTime for a tidy up. 652573

I have pretty much everything to build a second bike except a front rim and forks. Will have to organise the wiring and electrickery bits into a proper harness and get some painting done. I am thinking black...and nekkid.

I figured while i am waiting for parts i may as well give the K a tidy up. Nothing major really, more cosmetic than anything else. Got some different ideas on paint scheme on the engine and wheels, but haven't decided yet.

Have also modified a rack to go on the rear to double as a back rest for the MFWAF. Nearly lost her off the back last time, i got a little enthusiastic with the throttle and forgot she was on the back (oops) .She is a great pillion so i thought rather than her being nervous i would build a small sports rack to go on the tail.
Hope to get more done this weekend with my trusty sidekick(dog) Harry. Only problem is he likes to borrow rolls of tape, zip ties, sockets etc. But he is good company.
Here he is in one of his more serious moods.

I did some more tinkering this afternoon, with good and bad results.

First the bad.....
Pulled the FD and found that the input seal is leaking.

This is the gear selector indicator pick up, think its seen better days.

Now for the good... At least the engine and the frame are a bit cleaner now.

Nice idea on the copper Bert. IMHO if it's a very brash orangey shade it will look sh_te. Deeper copper tones would look good tho'. What did you clean the engine with?

Ok had a good day today in the shed working on the K.

Pulled the engine out of the frame, painted the wheels copper hi-lights, painted the front rotors and started to tidy a few things up.

Here are some pics.

I think the copper works as it is the darkest of these colours i have tested. I tried gold, brass and the copper on a test piece and the copper came out the best.
88 i used el-cheapo brand degreaser in a spray can($3 a can)and a tootbrush(not mine) and finished it off with throttle body cleaner. You gotta be careful with the TB cleaner though, because it can lift some paint finishes.
Thinking about painting the bike gloss black. Change is as good as a holiday they say. Funny how this all started with a certain someone making me some brass roundels.
Time for a tidy up. 2012-079
Anyhow cheers for now.

Evening Bert,
Looking good!
What paint did you use for the rotor inners?
Also, what's the story with that lift you have there?

Sean.

Thanks Sean, The paint i used on the rotors is brake caliper spray can from Supercheap.

The lift is actually a motorbike lift that a mate of mine gave me when he sold his bike. Came in very handy for this job, i just lifted the rear of the bike with a ratchet type winch from the roof of the shed. Undid all the bolts and wheeled it out. Saved me lots of time. I'm looking into building a proper bike type lift that they use in bike shops.

Fast work Bert.. I like your "shed" - plenty of room for swinging felines in there!

I like the idea of the gloss black and copper. If you had someone with a very steady hand to pinstripe the black with copper too it would be really cool and a bit retro. Time for a tidy up. 447221

Ok had an interesting weekend working on the bike.

Managed to get top coat on everything, had to do some emergency repairs though. I had 2 helpers (Cocker Spaniels) in the shed on saturday. They were trying to steal things out of my rubbish bin and as i went to shoo them away, the piece of material i had the tank sitting on( i was leaning on the tank) snapped in half. Tank hit the floor taking the pannier that was sitting beside it with it. Result nice dent in top of tank. Whilst i was ranting around the shed i knocked the tail piece off the bench onto the floor. Result cracked about 3 inches long. Time for a tidy up. 178468
Set me back a bit but still managed to get top coat on sunday. But did manage to drop one of the panniers after final top coat, just like toast it landed wet side down in the grass. More bad words.

Time for a tidy up. 2012-080
Oh painted the engine/box too.
Time for a tidy up. 2012-081
Got the motor back in the frame late on sunday arvo.
Time for a tidy up. 2012-082
Hope to do more during the week after work.

I like the look of the black bike and the copper bits.

Did you use rattle cans (White knight?) for the tank etc? I'm going that way myself (the colour may shock some folk here...namely Ajays).

Your bike will have an evil look about it when it's finished. Twisted Evil

Great work!

Hi ya all, getting there slowly. Yep Blakey i used good old rattlle (spray) cans from Bunnings. I did have a bit of a find though. I was looking thru there paints and found a clear gloss enamel. I tried it on the side covers and it worked well so i clear coated the other bits too.
I have tried a variety of clear coats in spray cans and have always ended up with a milky finish. So far i think the paint has set me back about $80.00, thats including the primer surfacer that i got from supercheap. Its there SCA brand and can really recommend it as it goes on nice and even and fills small imperfections.
I have one hiccup though, i had a tin of White Knight metal magic copper here at home and have just about run out but have more to do. Problem is it has been discontinued. My wife went to some more stores to find some and nothing, she came home with a cheaper brand but its to watery and you can see straight thru it. Ah well i will keep searching as its the only one with the nice rich copper colour.
Took my diff into my mate Murray at Retro Cycles this arvo as he is going to do the seal for me. I dont have the equipment for it and it saves me a bit of time.

So Blakey what colour are you going or is that a secret Smile

Secret. Not white, not red.

Well, it's interesting that you have the SCA primer surfacer. Me too.
Clear gloss enamel from Bunning's? Me too. Great minds think alike or fools seldom differ?

I have a couple of Bunnings around me. I'll have a look to see if they have the White Knight metal magic copper if you want.

Keep up the good work.

Many years back, if we are permitted as the K is classic, Norton were sponsored by John player and came up with the John Player Special which was painted a fabulour high gloss black and pinstripe gold colour. Stunning. The copper colour would look even better and for one I look forward to seeing the finished product. I have a large shed, 24 feet x 16 feet which I am working on and when finished will be a perfect space for doing such a job, complete with a beam over a work area. This seems to be providing an incentive now.

The K is hard to beat and the reliability of the mechanicals suggest its worth bringing one back to new irrespective of whether it is financially justified or not. When you consider it has everything and thne look at cost of a new bike it does certainly make sense to keep one going.

Good luck with it.

I prefer to think that great minds think alike Blakey, However......

Note to self and anyone else who will care to listen, when you are doing this sort of thing and you have the injectors out cover up the damn holes.

I was putting the TPS back on and dropped one of the screws down the hole, had to take the throttle bodies back off and when i looked down there i was lucky that the valve was only part open. The bolt had fallen into the valve area and the head was stopping it going all the way. Got it out with a bit of wire cos i couldn't find my magnet on a stick.

Stupid thing to do because i was rushing, i normally always cover any open parts like that up. I had visions of me with the engine hanging from the crank side with a plug out of the head trying to shake the screw out. Sad

You're lucky getting that screw out! Shocked

I went to two Bunnings today and couldn't find the copper paint. Although there was a hammer-finish copper paint. Just a thought...but it wouldn't suit the bike.

Find any more of that White Knight copper, Bert 2.0? Had a look in the usual places here in Guyra but found none. ( surprising really as often stock sits on shelves awhile in small towns). AM going to Armidale tomorrow and will have a capn cook there.

Thanks for lookin guys, i have been doing the same. Problem is i have had the tin for about 12 months now and i don't know when they stopped making it.

Yep Blakey i have seen that one its made by Rust-oleum, I only need it for really small things now(heads of bolts etc) so i'm thinking i might get away with the hammered copper stuff.

I did a bit more this arvo, my bits from Motor Works came today, not bad as i only placed order last thursday night. So i put the new o rings on the injectors and put them in and put the plenum back on and the coils and coil cover. Also painted the foot peg brackets. Hey Alby i have finally got my bitsfor oil/water pump so i can get yours back to you. It was great of you to help me out with that one, sorry to take so long getting the parts.
Here is some more pics.
I used hose clamps on the plenum so i can take it off if i decide to build a custom plenum. They aren't just normal hose clamps though they are Wurths clamps for intercooler hoses etc. They are narrower and have a lip on them so they don't cut into the hose.

The footpeg brackets look so much tidier now.

Jeez, that thing will be so black you will have to give out tickets for a ride. In the line I can see:-
Batman to replace the Batcycle
The Hoff to replace Kitt
& Hotblack Desiato to replace the last ship crashed into the sun to create a solar flare

There's always a spoiler in the crowd. I did my engine with satin black heat paint, looks great, not a sgood as yours. The downside is there is no way you can tell if any oil is escaping until it drips, you look down whilst riding and think, geez that crankcase cover looks wet, hope I haven't blown anything.
But you are doing a great job

RT, that is a problem? If you can't "see" a leak, therefore there is NO leak.

Oh and dont drop anything small and black on the top of the engine either, did that last night and had to get the torch out so i could find the damn thing.

The oil leak only exists when it forms a pool on the floor Smile

Bought some of that Rust-oleum(dymark) hammered copper this afternoon, its not quite the same. But i found if i spray the cheap copper paint over the hammered copper while its still wet it is close enough.

More to come over the weekend hopefully.
Hey Rick whats with the new avatar pic, is that you? Looks cool though.

I am impressed Rick, thats big kahuna territory IMHO.

I had a visit from Charlie99 and Albyalbatross today, was great to see the guys again.
Much talk about all things K and stuff, helpful tips as always on how to rebuild my oil/water pump and speculation as to what shade of PINK Blakey is painting his bike.
I was still tinkering away on assembly and such, rebuild rear master cylinder.
Put the rear Hagon shock back together(yup its black too) pulled the handlebars and the dash as they were looking a bit shabby against the rest.
Made a jig to hold the diff in the vice this arvo so i can do the input seal, only to discover that i dont have a 36mm socket. Will have to hunt one down tomorrow.
Still have a few things to paint and fiddle with but i think its getting there.
The paints not perfect and it still has a few blemishes here and there but hey i'm not restoring it, just a tidy up.
Will post up some more pics tomorrow night.

Ok so has been a been a busy couple of weeks at work and so forth. Didn't get as much done as i had hoped by last weekend, but have managed to finish off everything today. Just needs a wash and polish now.

Had a nice surprise visit from Rick G last saturday and it was great to catch up and have a coffee and chat, and had a short visit from Charlie99 today. Unfortunately couldn't chat for too long(daughters birthday thing happening) but still nice to see Charlie.
Anyhow here are some pics, i have put an extra feed into the airbox that i made out of 40mm pvc tube and if it works ok i will make one out of alloy. Oh and moved the ignition key down onto the top of the coil cover( thanks Scheffers i liked your idea) bar area is nice and tidy now.
