Greetings to all members!

For over two years I've been riding with engine safety/protection bar on one side only. The other got deformed when bike fell, and one of mounting studs (with rubber mount) snapped so it was impossible to install the bar properly.

My bike was produced in December 1988, chassis no. is 0175413K100LT, and
original bars bear the catalogue nos. 46 71 2 303 075 and 076.

A friend from Croatia who knows more about the Ks told me there is another type of the bars that fits my bike, but they offer a better protection. Yet till now he was unable to find them, or just give me their catalogue nos. so I could go looking for them at eBay and ask the Motorworks UK if they have them.

So - does anyone know which bars should I put, and where to find them???

Just had a look on MaxBMW fische and the parts they have listed are :

01 46 71 2 303 061 SET: ENGINE PROTECTION BAR SET - CHROME
01 46 71 2 303 062 SET: ENGINE PROTECTION BAR SET - BLACK

I am not sure if the part number may have changed, I have just checked mine which are : 46 71 2 315 553 and 46 71 2 303 076

Thanks - I had a look, but that does not make me any cleverer. You have on your bike one bar with identical number like mine, other different. And these on the link - I can't figure out can they be used on my bike too, and if yes, do they offer better protection (if yes, why?). Is it necessary to replace or install some additional brackets? My buddy told me that some older bars were screwed directly to the engine and that wasn't good because in the case of fall, bar could break the machine casing.

I am not sure what the difference is to be honest. It could be that your friend is saying there are 2 types one with the rubber insulation and possibly an earlier version without which would have been the earlier version.

If the new one's are dropped it would be the rubber or the bolt at the top which would give.

Both of mine are fitted with rubber dampers. The only difference I can think of with Official Vehicle ones is they may be bigger in order to fit sirens and lights to them... I wouldn't imagine they fit any differently from the one's we currently have fitted. The ones I have would fit yours without a problem as we both have 88 LT's

I wonder if the K1100 bars would fit our bikes? Maybe someone can answer that and say if there is any good reason to...

I have seen 2 types one is wider and has brackets for mounting things like lights etc they probably would protect the bike better.
The K1100 bars will fit onto a K100 but need the whole mounting kit as the left side bars on a K1100 are different to clear the exhaust pipes.

I hazard a guess that the wider one's with brackets are the official vehicle fit then.

Thanks for suggestions - I suppose you're talking about 46 71 2 303 081 left- and 46 71 2 303 082 right-side for Official versions, and
K 1100 LT's, 46 71 2 315 561 left- and 46 71 2 315 562 right-side ones?
I wonder if anyone (including BMW) is making kits for installing K 1100 bars on K 100 models?

The K1100 bars will fit on a K100 providing you use the whole kit for the K1100, they don't have the same rubber mounts as the K100.

I just repaired mine. If you have access to a welder it's really a simple job.

Thanks - but in my case it's not the bar that broke (though it DID get deformed), but it's holder - at the rubber damper. So I was looking for the better, stronger bars which would offer better protection for both fairing and engine.

As RickG says, the wider bars have brackets for lights/ sirens as fitted
to ex-police bikes like mine. These come factory fitted I believe on
police issue bikes. Alexander McCarthy has done a bit of searching on this so a PM to him may give you the answer. Worth a try.

I don't think they are any stronger but being wider just make fairing contact with scratchy stuff a bit more unlikely

I can vouch for the fact that if anything, they are weaker; the added width just makes them fold-up easier (unless it's the side with the siren, then that acts as a sort of crumple zone ).

I have the narrow ones on my K1100 and they protected the bike well a few weeks ago in a slow speed fall the mirror didn't even contact.
