Hi all..
I'm getting really close to getting this bike road-worthy.
Latest problem to solve, is the rattle coming from the front brakes.
I have previously replaced the master cylinder and the brake lines to get the brakes working again. I flushed and cleaned out the calipers. It felt pretty average and I noticed a rattle whenever the brakes were not being used. I thoroughly cleaned the discs (which were brake fluid contaminated) and fitted new Metal Gear brake pads.
Huge improvement in braking, but that darn rattle is still there. Only goes away when a little pressure is applied to the brakes.
I don't think it's dangerous, but it is really annoying..

Any suggestions?

What bike you got, if it's a 16v then they will rattle.

How do the pins that run through the top of the brake pads look? Did they slide out too easily?

You need to be sure these three pieces that eliminate excess pad movement are all there. They are a spring clip which provides tension and runs along the top of the pads and the two pins which keep the pads aligned. There's a bloke in Pommie land selling the pins in stainless on eBay. They are of very high quality.

See http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0513&mospid=51752&btnr=34_0618&hg=34&fg=11

and look at item 8.

I have the same symptom in what feels like my front right brake. Did you ever figure it out?

had a similar issue ....
found that the tube through the steering head rattles against the bottom  mount point just before the y split

a touch of silicon sealant to prevent movement- vibration between the two pieces  quietened it right up

I guess the vibrations were transmitted up the pressure lines to the loose bit which vibrated in sympathy against the bottom yoke especially with the slotted rotors .
