Hi Guys,

Fitted some LEDs today to the parking light circuit (thanks for the wiring advice 88 Very Happy).

I wanted to widen the visible profile of the bike so chose LEDs that looked like they'd fit under the mirrors. These are from Ebay and have 3 largish-looking LEDs in a block of metal. The plan was then to run the wires through the drain holes in the mirror bodies and in to the fairing. The LED's come with 3M double sided tape which holds them firmly in place.Took a while and a bit of fiddling but it's all come together. Just need to get a new bulb for the parking light....

Cheers
Dave

No worries ....my next post will be on use of fire fighting equipment Mirror mounted LEDs Downlo10.

They do look good and bright - I would love to see a daytime picture. Also you could consider replacing the stock parking light with and LED running light strip like the one CF used (and I copied) I would give you a very eye catching front profile.

Whats the UK rules on things like running lights? as the headlight is the one thats looked at for being directional and needs to extend to a certain height with a max wattage... LED's are a lower wattage but appear brighter...

It's the one thing I hate about riding bikes at night when it's pitch black and you can barely see due to the oncoming vehicles.

Not trying to hijack this thread but here is an alternative.
Mirror mounted LEDs Led_mo10
Bought a spare headlight from eBay for £5 and 10 10mm LEDs for £5. Such a tidy worker I hear you say.
Only downside is that since I removed the fairing I don't have the running light any more. Hmm.

I found this on DRLs in the UK Twincarb

http://assets.dft.gov.uk/publications/dft-information-sheets/daytime-running-lights.pdf

Statement on motorcycle use is ambiguous to me. They should be switched off at night.

Yeah there is a ceiling on legal headlight wattage.

DRLs are not designed to light the road and mine certainly don't. My aim was to make the front of the machine a wider target so it is more likely to be seen by motorists in the day. The psychology behind this is that car drivers see boxes not pencils (because they are expecting to see boxes) so by making your machine a bigger box-like target they are more likely to see you.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks for that link Dave.
When I made my DRL's, fitted in place of the pilot bulb, I originally dimmed them when the headlight was on and, with a later version, I switched it off completely. The reason being that, as it is in such a high position, it would 'beam' directly into rear view mirrors of any vehicle I was following.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Yes I can see that logic. I would like to wire mine so they can be switched off manually (for at night) but they are on during the day with the headlight dipped beam. I guess a switch or switches would work.

If the upside of my current arangement is a wider target the downside is it could make the indicators more difficult to see. Conversely it could draw attention to the fact I'm indicating!

All part of the fun!

Dave

Just read the doc and it makes sense.... Shame it doesn't give the max wattage and provide a wattage for night time running lights which would allow you to say have a seperate single bulb for night use. I def like the idea of having the extra lights which as you say make a larger visible presence...

My complaint was the number of oncoming vehicle drivers that see one headlight and refuse to dim their lights because they think its a car with one headlight.

You need some symmetrical running lights for night time so it is clear that it is a motorcycle and not a one eyed menace. I personally think lEDs in the mirror pods are good because they are up high and dont leave it looking one sided from an angle.

Seem to remember reading that 3 light sources coming towards a driver catch their attention better. Something to do with it being out of their normal expectation.
Also a good time to remember that almost all of us drive cars too. We should take that extra couple of seconds to check for bikes before we pull out. We are capable of being muppets as well as anyone.

A K RT headlight on main beam usually sorts that problem. Twisted Evil

Avenger GT well said.....so does fitting 130/110W H4 bulbs, but I havent done that yet until a relay is fitted. I have a pair of driving lights to fit too as I use the K a lot at night....they will have 130W bulbs but a bigger alternator needs to be fitted first. Right now I also need a bike to fit them to.

I use a couple of flashes of 3M white reflective tape on my mirrors, same as they use on comercial and emergency vehicles
Mirror mounted LEDs 3m_ref10
they are on the upward angled face of the mirror pod so they don't blind oncoming drivers but they do widen the profile. This picture is taken with the camera flash and LED running lights only on so it gives you an idea of what an oncoming car sees, useful to widen the profile on our Irish backroads..
