As I have never had a bike with ABS before, is changng the brake fluid, and rebuilding the master cylinder a straightforward job, or are there pitfalls that I need to be aware of?

Hi Kev,
No worries usually it is a good idea to bleed the ABS through its bleed valve and the wheel cylinder that way you should capture all the air. Note when you cycle the handbrake do it gently when the cover is off or a fountain of fluid can spurt up and fluid plus paint equals lot's of swearing. Jokes aside it is worth covering the whole area around and the petrol tank with plastic sheet and a towel on top of that the plastic being to prevent fluid reaching the paint and the towel to soak it up so it does not run off and drip. The towel can be rinsed out with fresh water and popped into the washing machine afterwards.
Regards,
