Went to Sydney and back a week or so ago to visit a mate who is crook. Rode down through Walcha and Gloucester. Left Bella at home as it's a bit too long a stretch for her and I would also be drinking wine at my mate Paul's place in Clareville. Perfect motorcycling weather: big sky country and about 20C; cool enough for proper gear but not freezing.

On the road at the bottom of the Barringtons I came across the remains of a bike prang. A guy had crashed and burned, literally and all I could recognise was an inline 4 motor and a drivetrain. The rest was all over the road and crispy. Cops and fire brigade all there and enjoying themselves. Apparently the rider was unhurt!

A good lunch was had at a new-ish cafe in Gloucester called Roadies. Discount for Ulysses members and other old codgers. Nice Norton and a Rudge inside.

South of Gloucester and before the Dungog turn off near Stroud, there was a fatal accident which closed the road. I did a U turn and took a punt on a turn off I had seen a couple of km back, which leads to Upper Monkerei or somewhere. This led to 60km of rough dirt road and eventual arrival at the back of Dungog. Along the way I broke the left fairing mount and cracked the headlight lens. Onto Sydney where I arrived after dark after stopping in Maitland for a coffee and a visit to my old Mum's grave as usual.

In Sydney after drinking too much wine and puncturing Paul's garden hose while playing darts, we decided to weld up the fairing mount and do some other minor repairs. We put in a new radiator and cooling fan which I just happened to have in the sidecar and also a new air filter element. I just typed that quickly and it all sounds so easy....this little job that became a two day epic involving angle grinders and welders and removing the sidecar to get at the radiator etc. Anyway, all done now.

On the Sunday after we'd visited Alex in Dulwich Hill, we drove back to Coogee to drop Mark off, wandering through a green light and killing an Audi on the way through. The shiny, black A5 looked a mess, the 1970-something or so F100 we were travelling in ( with a 351 Cleveland thank you very much) suffered a minor dent behind my passenger door. Soon repaired.

Sydney and Back by outfit. Sam_0617

The excitement of city living was all getting a bit much for this boy from the bush, so I packed up my gear and headed home again on the Monday...sneaking 145kph this time out of the old girl across the top of the tablelands before I ran out of straight twice. The new air filter has definitely improved breathing, but I feel with a new set of plugs and when Cafe62 has modified an exhaust for me, I can hope to touch the old ''ton'.

Don't you like Sydney traffic? Last time I was there I was stuck behind a lady in a SUV, who stopped at every set of red lights, turned around and carried on a discussion with a back seat passenger. She remained so even when the lights turned green. After two sets of lights...same story, I flashed my lights to let her know that she could go...no response, so I flicked on my air horns and used them. She looked around at me in my old four wheel drive ute and bull bar...then drove off....through the red light! The lights had changed again.

What the heck do you mean 'NO COURTESY'?
You country boys come down here with your silly little tricycle, hogging our roads with that extra wheel that we have paid for, using our traffic lights that we have paid for, driving over our bridges that we have paid for, going through our 40kph school zones that we have paid for, using our big green 'this is how you get there' signs that we have paid for, not using our speed cameras that you should be paying for and you want us to be nice to you as well????

What a hide.

Well we have lots of trees so you cityites don't choke to death on the smog that they produce, we have cold air to cool the hot air that they produce and we have mountains to mqake it rain so they can drink clean water that falls on our place.
Of course we also have cute little mountain cottages that they can rent up here for the weekend while we take all their money too.

The Romans gave the NSW rail network the gauge for the rail line.
It is the width between the wheels of a Roman chariott. 4 feet 8 1/2 inches.

20C ! bloody hell I'd melt in "proper gear" if it got up to that here.

Nice pics tho' Sean.

Capital cities are one place I love ......to get the hell out of. I find the same when I take spins into our small Capital, when I exit the Glen'O'Downs just south of the city heading home I always feel a relief come over me. Can't believe I lived there once either. I moved out because I spent every possible moment not working trying to get away from it.

I'm sure the "puppy" was glad to see you when you got home.

88,
Proper gear for me is my old leather jacket with a pullover underneath, my ancient Bellstaff pants, boots, a neckwarmer and gloves. Although it gets fresh up here on the tablelands, it's not exactly like riding in a European winter!

That's true, BigD. I get too used to my relaxed life and easy riding on all the back country roads here. Mind you, as the population increases, old codgers like myself start to complain about the place being full. Even other bikers are a health hazard these days!

Sounds like my winter gear which I would only put on if temp goes below 5°C Laughing I can't even remember if I had a chance this year to ride the bike in 20°C. Well, we had one day, I got burnt red like a lobster on the beach in Youghal sunny

Is it not boring down there, riding on dry roads all the time Question (envy...)

BTW about the Simson badge at the back - have you ever ridden one? Funny machines, that was my first motorbike experience.

Björn, yes I have. I lived in Leipzig for a few years and had a Simson AWO and an MZ,
Quite liked the AWO...wish I still had it....but in those days they were all dirt cheap and as usual I failed to appreciate it and hang onto some stuff I should have....
I bought an MZ 250 Trophy for 1 D mark. ....etc,

Those MZ's where good old tools Sean, I had a Trophy myself bought two for £15 ran them for years come rain, shine snow never missed a beat, mind you the bar end indicators soon got destroyed having dropped the thing a few times Very Happy and those leading link forks were something else, and you won't to see the prices they fetch now "hindsight" wish I had kept half the stuff I had as a youth.

Rare ould times.... I had the Simson S51 as a start, then the MZs - both 125 and ETZ250 (never had the MS/Trophy though). As you said lads, they were indestructible.

I believe the ETZ300 is still in production in Turkey. The Turkish lads once worked im Vaterland cannot give them up Laughing

I was under the impression that this company was long gone.
Am I dreaming or what? Is that the same company?

No, I believe MZ Motorrad came up with the big ones after the GDR was gone. The original one (ETZ251/301 name and knowhow) was sold to Kanuni, Turkey. I'm not sure whether and when they ceased production...

Just came to my mind a couple of months ago that I should go over to the East of Germany and grab an ETZ251 - many of them still hanging around in Sachsen, I saw a handful of beautiful ones in Vogtland last year - but other events prevented me Sad
