Hi all, just had my bike ('88RT) in for a tune up due to rough idle. Valve clearances were fine, but the machanic tells me the shafts on the Throttle bodies are worn, and small amounts of air are getting in. Its running a lot better than it was now, but I'm wondering if the Throttle Bodies can be overhauled with new shafts, bearings etc?? And if can be done locally in Australia?? Has anyone had a similar experience? Would the cost of this be ridiculously expensive, or would I be better off trying a second hand set of throttle bodies first?

cheers

i think you would be better of getting a second hand set.
the cost of a reco would be...er....um to say the least expensive.

HI Andy,

It would be nice to see how you go, but from my experience, it looks more of a pain than it is worth. The problem is that the TBs are individually set on the flow bench and having to retune them looks a pain (unless u have a flow bench).

My 86RS TBs would fall apart in a pile of parts which need to be reassembled.

Can u get bits (bearings) to insert?

Another question is: is it TBs or the manifold rubbers top and bottom?

Thanks for the replies Rick & Ned. Actually I didnt ask the question about the rubbers...........maybe I should have........

I guess I'll need a new set if I pull them off anyway!!!

not sure which system u have but it is relatively easy. The TBs come off as a block and the rubbers are easy and cheap enough to replace.

test the leaks your self. Get something volatile like carb cleaner, get the machine to idle and start squirting the interface connections that is top and bottom for each TB. I've even used WD40 with a nozzle and it was good enough.

don't forget injector holes (old O rings) and connections all the way back to the air intake. What you are looking for is a change in idle ... it will show u which parts are leaking.

this how they look ... not bad at the first look

The one on the right is a brand new bottom bit.
