Hi all, great site. Hoping for suggestions. Is it possible to swap the gear change to the right and brake to the left? Screwed together left ankle giving a bit of jip.
Also, gear oil leaking out around the gear lever, is this a big operation to fix?

The leaking oil should be easy by diging the seal out and then putting one back in making sure not to get too rough.
I have done a few bikes over the years for people with prosthetic leg etc.
You could use the master cylinder and extend the hydraulic line, you would need to make a lever as you couldn't move the brake lever to the right side.
The gear lever can be done by some linkages similar to what rearsets have and a shaft across the frame probably above the gearbox and infront of the battery.
Anything can be done but is it worth the time and or money.

I'd look at a lot of modifications before starting down the road of designing one for yourself gmcq. That's "doable" but not as easy as it might first look.

Pop over to the new members section and stick up an intro about yourself and the bike, as is the custom here (and also necessary for access to the downloads section which you'll need.)

Hi gmcq,

These things can be done. It's not much help to a K owner but when I bought my first BMW, an '78 80/7, all my bikes were 'british' format so I made linkages to swap over the gearchange lever and brake lever to the PROPER side. The parts are still in the shed.

Legality varies from country to country and you'd have to get your question answered by someone familiar with Irish road regulations. Your best bet is to contact the Department of Transportation and make an inquiry.

with regard to the rules on gearlever placement and brake placement. if your very fine island has left hand braked nortons and bsa's then you should be able to follow suit as you would be using a footpeg mount that is not a unit part of the frame and so should be exchangeable to your prefferences

Regarding the legality of such a mod.
I would imagine that if it gets a pass from our government run MOT centres, it should be OK.
The MOT centre might be a good place to start any enquiries about it anyway.
On a similar note, I spotted a guy on one of the new Norton Commandos in Newcastle a few weeks ago. I was told he lost an arm, right one I think, and all the controls were now on the left bar.
Hard to imagine how you would adapt to that.
Maybe meet you next month at the Autumn run, gmcq. I'm not too far from you if you ever need a hand with the K.

As long as you have the controls on the bike and they work then it is considered road legal. There is no specification stating that things have to be where they are "normally found"...

It's just that all bike and car manufactures copy cat the positions as thats where we are used to them being... just think in a car the headlight switch's are often found in different locations depending on the make and model

yep makes it all interesting ...once had a duke (left hand brake pedal ) and a yammi on the farm (right hand brake pedal ) always knew when i couldnt change gear ...to think a little more about it ...after a while no issue at all

Yeah I have seen them used, they are very effective at bending selector forks.
